The McNabb family

Juliaamullinn

Brummie babby
Hi all!! My great Grandmother Ellen McNabb lived in Birmingham with her siblings Hubert McNabb, Willliam “Bill” McNabb, Leo McNabb, and her mother Sarah Jane Cullen and father William-George McNabb. From records I found through ancestry, I know Hubert was married to a woman named Lily and they did not have any children together. I can confirm through my Aunt that Bill was married and had 3 daughters named Julie, Pris, and May. However I cannot find the name of his wife. Now Leo, per my Aunt he was a bachelor and she’s not sure he ever married. Through the ancestry registered Electors, he is listed with a Sadie McNabb and a George McNabb. I have record that Sadie passed in 1964 but no other info on Leo to see if he had any children, on this George McNabb that he lived with, and on Bill’s wife and 3 daughters. I’ve researched extensively and I’m just looking for some help. My great grandma Ellen came to the states in the 40s with my grandfather after the war and unfortunately couldn’t keep contact with everyone. Im just looking to see if there is anyone left from her side of the family. Also an address of theirs that I have, Ellen, her son William, Leo, Sadie, and George all have lived at 73 Cox Street West, Balsal Heath, Warwickshire, England. Any and all help is very much appreciated!

Julia - do you know if William continued to live in Birmingham or not? Also an approximate birth date might help. Thanks

Hubert, William and Leo are in an orphanage in Liverpool in 1939. Sadie/Sarah is in Bham at the Cox St West address with a John McHale. He remains there into the 1960s.

Yes- I spotted that on the 1939 reg.

This seems accurate. I spoke with someone through ancestry who had Hubert in their family tree and they stated he was an orphan at the age of 16. I don’t know what happened there. If something happened to their father and their mother couldn’t take care of them. By 1939 my grandma Ellen was 20 and she got married that year to a Reginald Dixon. She had a child with Reginald, named Jean but I can’t find any information on Jean anywhere. I also have no idea what her date of birth is. My aunt believes she would be about 84 now so she would’ve been born around 1941.

Yes Reginald was in the RAF. However my great grandfather was in the US army and stationed in Birmingham and the beaches of Normandy which is how he met my great grandmother (ellen). According to my aunt her marriage with Reginald was not a good one and eventually Reginald found out she was seeing my great grandfather and took her to court and she was ordered to never have any contact with Jean again. And she stayed in Birmingham until the war was over and gave birth to my grandfather there and then followed my great grandfather to the states following the war and shortly after married him.

one day out on birth date given in post #10 which suggests 20th not 19th.

Let's concentrate on Veronica J. As I think she is most likely Jean and presumably stayed with Ronald after the divorce.

it is possible jan in which case i think the only way to find out for certain would be for julia to obtain veronicas birth cert which can be obtained from the GRO..this would have to be a full birth certificate and would have to be sent by post which to the usa could take a few weeks but at least we would know for certain ...link to the the GRO is below if julia wishes to order it

There is a note at the bottom of the page for the original entry of William Dixon's birth

Suggesting there was a name change registered in 1948 which probably makes sense - so the 1948 record relates to the name change not the dob.
