An old and new view of Pershore Road. St Agnes Church in view (built 1903 but demolished in the 1980s). Quite a few of the shops are still there but the Church was replaced by a supermarket.

A question: what is the geographical difference between Cotteridge and Stirchley ? They seem to be names that are interchangeable. Viv.

A few snippets of history about Cotteridge and the Cotteridge House :

"Cotteridge House was built c1680 in Motts Field, a name referring to a moat, a feature of many 13th-century manor houses and substantial farms. The house is now demolished and the site between Middleton Hall Road and Watford Road built over".

And according to a Birmingham Mail article

" ...........1841 Census it is not clear who was living in Cotteridge. Cotteridge then consisted of two houses and five cottages!".

This is from a slide described as " On Canal, Birmingham", early 20th century, froma collection of slides taken by Charles F. Hayward. Can we identify where it is?

Cotteridge would be from the top of the " factory centre" Hill on Pershore Road then past all these shops down to Breedon Cross where the canal crosses. Then its Stirchley down what was Stirchley high St to the Dogpool. All very localised areas.

A Carl Chinn article about memories of Cotteridge.

O.M.G...This is brilliant...used to do this walk when I missed the Night service 45...but I had to carry on all the way up Redditch Road to just before the Man in the Moon...lol. Recently found out Wife's family lived on Pershore Road...1st on Stirchley St then 1705 Pershore Road...just up from the Breedon. Also a long association with Midland Road..Laurel and Franklin Road.St Agnes was their local church where Wife's parents Wed....when it was demolished all the memorials for Cotteridges fallen hero's was binned....even though it didn't belong to the church.....I think the Church on the Island had other remnants but deny all knowledge of the memorials....and theres a not very healthy " discussion " still going on as supporters try and get these remade.....
