Sarah Roberts (nee Brown)

master brummie
My turn to ask for help - this has defeated some of the finest brains on the Forum :joy: - well... mine and Lyn's so I am throwing it over to you.

Background:

According to my mom her mom (my Gran) never knew her Mother (my Great Gran) as she died when my Nan was born. Nan grew up in a mix of orphanage (no idea which one), relatives (mainly I think her dad’s brother William) and her dad and stepmother.

I searched and found Nan’s birth cert which tied in with what my mom knew – parents Thomas and Sarah Roberts (nee Brown). Nan was born 28th May 1891, and the birth was registered by Sarah on July 2nd. That is the last time I can find Sarah for definite.

I have my Nan on 1901 census with her father Thomas and a stepmother Eliza, so Sarah is not in the picture

By 1911 my Nan was married and living in Shirley with my Grandad.

According to Sarah and Thomas’s marriage cert her father was also Thomas. I think I have Sarah on the 1881 census with parents Thomas and Anne. I can’t find Sarah and Thomas on the 1891 census.

Thomas was born in abt 1856 in a village in Warwickshire called Lighthorne

Facts:

1861Februrary Sarah Brown born (based on census info – if I have the correct birth cert but it fits other details for parents)
1861 census Sarah, parents and siblings at Great Barr Street – matches address on birth cert
1871 Sarah, parents and sibling sin Montague Street
1881 Sarah, parents and siblings at Ivy Lane – Sarah is an umbrella maker
1881 Sarah marries Thomas Roberts at St Saviours Church Saltle

1891 census Mother Ann, a widow, living at 18 court 8 Palmer Street, with several of her children
1891 May 28th my Nan born at 8 court Palmer Street.
1891 July 2nd Sarah registers Nan’s birth - that is the last definite knowledge I have of Sarah

By 1901 Nan is with her father Thomas and stepmother Eliza plus stepsister Lily Jackson and half-brother Thomas living 18 court 27 Gooch Street.

So I would be grateful for any ideas - thanks in advance

Questions:

where are Sarah and Thomas on 1891 census?
Where is Sarah after 1891 birth registration?
Have I missed a possible death? (not 1898 and not 1915).

When you say Sarah died when your nan was born. As she registered the birth that's not literal?

Was there a marriage for Thomas Roberts and Eliza?

Couldn't see anything likely. The only death for a Sarah Elizabeth Roberts of the right age I could see was in Wrexham, so very unlikely. Coincidently there is a death for a Sarah Elizabeth Jackson of about the right age reg. Aston 1899.

I was always told Sarsh died when nan was born but that can't be literal since she registered the birth. I am not sure if it was what my Nan was told.

I haven't found a marriage for Thomas and Eliza and, I think, by 1911 he is no longer with them. I don't have a death for him in spite of following up on several possible deaths
.

I think there's a typo for Sarah & Thomas' marriage (1888 rather than 1881?) which threw me,

Is that not his death in Aston Dec qtr 1913?

In 1901 there is a Sarah Roberts - Prisoner - at Dudley Road - sub police station. Aged 40 - occupation "umbrella maker".

However her status is "S" - single.

William.

Nan was Fanny Elizabeth Roberts.
No siblings that I am aware of.
The only relatives I know of are Phyllis Roberts - a cousin. The daughter of Thomas's brother William. I never knew her but mom did. However, I did know her daughter.
And another sibling of Phyliis called Phoebe who my mom vaguely recalled.

I contacted the Police Museum but they were unable to provide any more information about her. So I am left wondering. Name fits as does the occupation.

A bit of a stretch but I see on the 1911 census Eliza birthplace is given as Llandudno. Wrexham is between the two.
