hi pedro..im not certain although a lot of the info seems correct..we can clearly see a ditch and also waste ground but the aston expressway is quite a way from ormond st which starts at summer lane and ends at newtown row..would there be anymore newspapers articles please..thank you

pedro newtown row is the A34....i thought it a tad strange that a bus could jump from the aston expressway and end up there...however looking again at the photo i now think it was taken in newtown row (not summer lane) with what was ormond st on the right...cheers

just to confirm the location of my photo on post 779 it is taken on newtown row looking towards the city centre with what was ormond st on the right where the bus has jumped the ditch...below is scottish maps link i have set it to ormond st and newtown row...just move the blue dot to fade out the map to see what is there now...we can clearly see the 3 blocks of flats as seen in my photo..lyn

Some years back that photo was in the Evening Mail. My Aunt Win swore she was one of the little girls pictured!
My maternal grandparents lived at 282 Summer Lane from 1931-1934. I really appreciate seeing this photo - thank you!

I owned the newsagent shop from approx 1973 till 1983 ish. The other photos are of the yard between the newsagents and the cafe where 2 brothers ran a carpentry business. There was wood being seasoned on racks which was not used till it had been there for 7 years

the carpenters/joiners were named jones, they both wore dungarees and had pencils behind their ears whenever I saw them. A very interesting area full of wonderful people. I recall an older lady called lil who on a Sunday morning would always bring me a breakfast sandwich as the cafe was shut. Told me lots of stories about the local area

i know I often think along the same lines.

I think the gates you can see were the gates to the firm I worked for Preedys, that was their yard then, this was in 1963 about
I have only just joined this forum and just seen the photograph. It’s very interesting. What year would this be please? My family lived in the back to backs in the 1930’s before it was destroyed in 1940. They were all killed except my mother who was 7 years old at the time. Their name was Ashmore. Any help would be appreciated thank you
Very sorry to hear about your family's story. Hopefully some of the members here may be able to help with information about the area.
hi jankie..very sad story indeed...i take it the family died during ww2 bombing of the area..its possible it could have been reported in the newspapers

hi jankie you may already know this but all the names of your ashmore family are on the tree of life memorial for all birmingham civilians who died during the ww2 air raids..this is situated in the city centre just down from st martins church..click on the link below and scroll down to the first panel of names then click on the panel to enlarge it.. i think there are 8 ashmore names on it...hope this is of some help
