There were stables behind the Crown, in fact I believe the building(s) still exist behind the Crown. I think part of the stables was the later pub toilet facilities, The pillars must have been where access was gained to the stables.

I've had a look at the 1887 map and it shows the first pillar at the gateway to be the fullest extent of the main building. So there was no building above the gateway in the 1880s.

The edge of the General Elliott Hotel building appears on the right of this photo of Station Street .... although the sign only shows the words "General Hotel".
Seems to have used the name 'General Hotel' in 1891 and 1892.
