Twister

I found an ancestor in the 1911 census whose occupation was Twister. Apparently, this was to do with the rag and bone trade, and twister referred to the motion of the hands as the person turned over the items.

My wife worked at a woollen mill in Yorkshire. She says that after she had taken the full reels of wool off her machine they were taken downstairs to the Twisters who then rewound it to the necessary thickness ]ply] needed.

For general info. It was a reserved occupation before 1916 in the cotton trade, but not the woollen trade. Was then referred to as a Warp Twister.
