Celebrities in passing

Has anyone had a celebrity or well know person walk past them on a Birmingham street, or perhaps seen one “off duty” in an unexpected setting in the city? I know some may find it difficult to suppress a feeling of overwhelming jealousy when I say this, but Bob Price and Cyril Fletcher once walked past me in Kings Heath park after filming an episode of “Gardening Today” there. I’m pretty certain I saw Kevin Rowland of Dexy’s Midnight Runners fame strolling down Middleton Hall Road near Cotteridge, and Pat Roach walked past me in town but they hardly count because they were locals anyway!

My claim to fame way back in the 60's I was walking toward Richard Chamberlain outside The Woodman on Easy Row he was on The Alex , one Saturday afternoon I saw Francis Matthews (Paul Temple) in a faqn safari suit in The Longboat PH. Edwin Richfield the actor was driving along Cambridge Street with a traffic cone stuck underneath his car being his knight in shining armour I pulled it out from underneath after all you cant see the lands best thespians get their hands dirty can you. Finally The Bell PH on the way into Walsall one Saturday afternoon I saw Roy Wood the musician and on another Saturday I saw Mr Acker Bilk ,ay have been a stranger on the shore no stranger to the inside of a pub though . Another name that I forgot to mention was the actress Megs Jenkins she was a lovely looking woman crossing Hill Street at the back of the Futurist That's my lot too date

Bumped into Roy Wood in Tower Ballroom
i used to see lots of the cast of Crossroads back in the day
in Blackpool where i live used to see alot of stars
Cilla Black The Nolans they used to live here
Ken Dodd and last of all
Robbie Williams of Take That
out for awalk on the Prom the quiet bit where we live
the Wife had Kittens lol
 
A impressive list. Now you mention him I remember seeing Roy Wood in the car park outside ASDA at Minworth, and on another occasion inside the store I got talking to Vickie Perks, the lead singer of Fuzzbox. She was buying strawberries and champagne as I recall and couldn’t have been nicer. Oh, and in another supermarket (can’t remember which) I saw naturalist and TV presenter Terry Nutkins.

I've met a few well known people through retail work but those in passing...

Cleo Laine and her husband Johnny Dankworth I saw browsing in the Bargain Bookshop in New Street, near the Odeon. I think they were on at Ronnie Scott's that night.

Another Roy Wood one - he and his then girlfriend were sitting a few rows behind my friend and I when we went to see Oliver at the Gaumont. I only noticed them in the interval when I went to get an ice cream!

I was walking through New Street shopping centre one morning in the early 80's, and Phil Oakey of the Human League walked past me in full make up, hair on one side and in a full length trenchcoat. They were playing at the Odeon that night.
Not in passing, but I was in W.H.Smiths later in the 80's, and a tannoy announced that Saint and Greavesy were signing copies of their book in the store. As it was December, I thought it would be an ideal Christmas present for my Dad. So I joined the queue, and a student in front of me gave them a copy of Cider with Rosie to sign. Ian St. John was absolutely livid. Greavesy said "Well it is an all time classic, Saint", but the Saint was in a foul mood as he signed the book for me.
I've never seen Roy Wood so I must be a sissy :)
 
I'm another that has seen Roy Wood, in my case in Perry Common and at Sainsbury's. I have also seen Andy Townsend, Ian Taylor, Gordon Cowans and Juan Pablo Angel (all of Villa fame) at local supermarkets. I have sat with Barbara Castle and Douglas Hurd on trains to/from Brum and seen Matt Busby and Honor Blackman at Euston station. I have been in the same pubs/bars as Chris Old & Mark Waugh (cricket) as well as John Gidman, Andy Gray, Dennis Mortimer and the rest of the European Cup winning Villa team. My wife has sat on a train with Ann Widdecombe and spotted Boy George back in the day (in the ladies at the Rum Runner :eek: ).

In the 1980s a company I worked for was part owned by a rather well to do fellow who insisted his son spent time working there occasionally in order to give him a taste of manual labour. He was a nice young chap, I think he may have gone to a Public School, spoke with a Home Counties accent and had the relaxed, confident manner of someone who never had to lie to the Provident man that their mom was out when he knocked on the door for money. I can’t remember how the conversation arose but he mentioned he’d met Princess Anne, and I expressed my disbelief in two words. He repeated that he had indeed met her, and I asked him how and where. “At my friend’s house” he said. “What was she doing there?” I asked, still not convinced. “Well, she was asleep on the sofa. She’d been out riding all day but she woke up when we came in”, he said matter of factly. “Did you speak to her?” I asked, realising he wasn’t fibbing. “Yes”, he replied. “What did you say?” I said, nonplussed. “Hello Anne” he replied, shrugging his shoulders. It really wasn’t a big deal for him.

His daughter went to school with my niece and he lives not far from my sister.
We have been drinking with him in Solihull and he attended a family party at Our Lady of Lourdes in Billesley.
