Perry Barr stadium will shut its doors in August 2025 after almost 100 years in Birmingham - here's how it looked in its final months before the closure
this time at the cost of the speedway venue at perry barr....i find it incredible that yet more housing is going to built while the hundreds of apartments opposite the speedway still lie empty over 2 years since completed...
Sadly I can't see any mention of it being Birchfield Harriers original stadium (as the first Alexander Stadium, named after W W Alexander, completed in 1927 to celebrate the club’s 50th Jubilee). This history is so often overlooked in favour of its speedway and greyhound racing history. Birchfield Harriers were the first club to own their own track.
Hope someone manages to secure the William Bloye leaping stag plaque. Or maybe the 1920s building displaying the plaque will be preserved in the redevelopment. We live in hope ! But I somehow doubt it.
If you check out post #3 on the thread below you'll see the name 'Birchfield Harriers' proudly displayed on the building, this was facing Aldridge Road/Wellhead Lane. The BH sign was replaced with 'Perry Barr Stadium', presumably, when the new stadium was built at Perry Park.
Do you know I along with my wife and young daughter used to go to the dogs as they say here on a Saturday night . I was lucky there was a gentleman that used to bung me a couple of free tickets for the dogs not every week but every couple of weeks . I loved it a pint while you watched the doggies run around , I loved a bet too not much about 0.50p which I think was the minimum stake I always betted on one number and more often than not it would come in . While my wife's selection would be still running anyway my daughter who was about 12 at the time started screwing her face asking while I always won and she didn't , she coaxed the number I always put my bet on from me . Do you know something as soon as I let my secret out I nevr woner won a penny again .
