Lyndon Green Farm Yardley

Edit. Post copied to this thread from the St Bernard's Grange thread

1911 census only lists 2 properties in Lyndon Green.
Lyndon Green Farm and a cottage occupied by a "cowman" (I assume a farm worker).

Lyndon Green Farm was 'destroyed' in 1939. Why 'destroyed' and not 'demolished'? It was near Larne Road. Was it destroyed as a result of WW2 bombing ? Or a natural event ? Or fire ? Or did it simply mean demolished ?

doubt it was destroyed by ww2 bombs viv....not in 1939 as bombing had not started then

The farm was sold in 1935, I think - cattle auctioned in Dec 1935 by Mr Bosworth (same surname as 1911 census) "who has sold the farm"

Reference in 1934 to it being available for immediate development.

No newspaper entries for 1939 that I can find.

True Lyn, so that's out !
would have thought viv if it was destroyed by fire it would have said so....my feeling it was delmolished ..lots of re developement in the 1930s....ahh yes just noticed janices post 22 sold for development...how sad is that but its happened many times..probably not thought important enough to put much in the papers as ww2 was looming upon us

A farm that claims to date back to the 1700s. Some parts look either Tudor or Elizabethan. According to information about the B&W image, it was located on Larne Road, although the drawing gives the location as Barrows Lane. It looks to have been a substantial farm.

The farm must have been then in that corner where Garretts Green Road meets Barrows Lane stretching across to Larne Road. So just north of St Bernards Grange. A very rough outline on today's map below

yes i posted that a few days ago jan..looked to me like the farm was roughly where there is now a cul de sac but i dont know the name of it..

This looks to me like it was a substantial farm with land covering the equivalent of 53 football pitches. So effectively covering a large area north of St Bernards Grange.

I wondered if it was associated with Lyndon Manor House - demolished in the 1970s - I think. This was the second Lyndon Manor House and was located not far from St Bernards Grange at the junction of Manor House Lane and Barrows Lane. (Not to be confused with the first Lyndon Manor House being near Church Road, Horse Shoes Lane and Common Lane)

Looks a good possibility, Janice. It's interesting that the Manor House is relatively small in relation to the Lyndon Green Farm site. I expect the Manor House was once moated.

Another view of the farm (left). Possibly some housing just visible beyond the farm buildings. Maybe this was just as building had started on 1930s housing in this area and just prior to the demolition of the farm.

viv if you look at the photo closely on post 14 i think i can see modern housing to the left and right of the cottage so what road would that have been

When I first lived near there in 1940's there was a Manor House Rd and a Bilton Grange Rd. At that time BCFC players lived in this area Elmay Rd. though soccer player's houses were not so grand as their present day counter parts.

On this present day map I've marked some reference points:

Red dot = farm/farmyard main entrance (Larne Road)
Purple dots = the convergence of two footpaths leading to the farm (behind these houses on Elmay Road). Both footpaths lead to Garretts Green Lane.
Yellow dot = estimate of where the main farmhouse building stood (as Janice indicated in post #10) although can't be 100% sure which part was the main house.

Theres a gully behind the houses in Larne Road and Kennedy Croft. It follows the route of the track in the farm photo. I've marked it in yellow below and rotated the map to match the image in post #16. Was this an access route (and not a road) for the building of the houses in the 1930s? If so, were the houses we see in this view in the photo a rear view of Larne Road homes in the process of being built ? If this is the case, the building of the new houses started before the farm was demolished.

The alleyway is still there today with an entrance on Kennedy Croft.

Were these alleyways commonly used as access tracks when building 1930s estates ? I know we had them all along the backs of the Kingstanding 1930s houses.
