I just discovered several generations of family (Collins) lived at 171 and 172 Hockley Hill, during the 1841 and 1851 censuses. This photo happened 100 years too late, but its still amazing to me! Thank you for sharing!

Worked at Howletts 1961 through to the move to Thimblemill Lane and beyond. The fishing trips would have been organised by Billy Hancox whose job seemed to be Social Secretary - he also kept the Snooker and Table Tennis Tables in tip top order. Changed times!!

Peter Marsh Lamps

Somewhere in the Aston/Newtown area, between 1945 and 1950 this little business was making lamps by hand. They had two main types, one of them was clear glass blown into a wire frame to make a shape similar to a very large bunch of grapes. The other was made by using coloured cuttle glass...

thanks to pedro for this info and article...there maybe a map on this thread showing where no 146 was

The charred ruins of a second floor workshop at Norton Brothers cabinet making works at 146 1/2 Hockley Hill, Birmingham, which was burned out in a midnight fire. Extensive damage was also done in a workshop on the ground floor. As the picture shows, the roof of the building was completely destroyed.

The more recent maps showing numbering are comletely different to late 1880-early 1900 maps, and there do not seem to be any maps immediately pre WW2. But have estimated where 146 was , but am not entirely certain. On the c1888 map below, I am pretty sure that the numbers in black are correct. the one in blue I am not certain of, but think it is probably no 146, but might be 145. If it is 146 I would guess 146½ would be the building in blue behind.

There was no renumbering. In 1881 no 185 was on the corner with Well St, occupied by John Vinrace, surgeon. In the 1950s it was a bank. On the map in the 1880s it is an open space, so presumably in the 1880s it is the building marked 185 in red

thanks mike i guessed it was large house...john vinrace is the person i am researching..the odd thing is that he also lived at bromford house at 6 ways aston and when that house went (most likely due to a fire) a bank was built on its ground..the same thing happened to his house at hockley hill...a bank was built on its ground..i wonder if the same bank built on both spaces...think it was a lloyds bank on the corner of wells st it was mom and dads bank for years...do not know what bank was on the corner of lozells road and birchfield road..st view here of where no 175 once stood..

i cant swear to it but i dont think ive seen a close up of the grand turk pub think ive only seen it in photos from a distance..corner of hockley hill and icknield st date wise early 1900s..so that spire to the right would be ickneild st school..

just going back to my photo of the grand turk...does anyone know what that little building is to the right of the horse and carriage...could it be like a little shelter for people to wait for the pick ups..

edit..just been told its a cab mans shelter

It is very similar to the cabman's huts that were placed at cab stands eg Mosely. Looking at the 1880s map , indeed there is a cab stand there.

Popped up to Harry Smiths last year - and was surprised to see it closed and empty. Had not been since Covid 0- which I assumed was thefinal nail in the coffin. I had always thought they started in the corner shop and expanded, but seeing ity now in the photo - all the hardware shelves were in the right hand shop. live and learn!

Was the place to go to for odds and ends - both in early 1960's when living in Little King St & in 1990-20010' ish when working in Key Hill Cemetery. My eldest brother had a Saturday job there in 64-5, and popped in when in Brum early 2000's - still knew where to find everything in the hardware section! It was being run by the owners son, who was also a lad in the 60's. Those sort of shops arfe disappearing now as tyhe old owners pass on. Much better than faceless B+Q.

Good evening. I am looking for details about Henry Herbert Friend who lived at 87 Hockley Hill, Handsworth, Birmingham.
I have seen from the maps posted in this thread that it was on a corner.
Are there any old photographs of number 87 Hockey Hill that any of you know of?

I remember being sent there to buy odds and sods when I worked in the Jewellery Quarter in the 80s. Mouse and rat traps (the building I worked in was infested), ammonia, white emulsion paint, all manner of cleaning fluids etc. It didn’t really stand out from the many other hardware shops that were around at the time…goes to show you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
 
I remember Blooms from my time in the 50's. We lived at the Herbalist shop down from there. Boots Health & Herbal Store at 117 Hockley Hill. Any one have images of that place?

Then there is a big building(s) marked 131-135, which must be the darker building, then a wall, which I take to be where there are assorted buildings set back from the road, and then the multi coloured block (Howlett's) , which I take to be the block marked "Metal works" with a gate (which is outlined in white in the photo) in the middle corresponding to the crossed gateway on the map, followed by the block marked 140 on the map. I may be wrong, but that seems to me to be the most likely.
