William Street-1851

Nicola C

proper brummie kid
Good morning everyone.
I am researching a family member on ancestry and have found a street name on an 1851 census from Birmingham. I have attached a photo (marked with a red circle). It states Thomas Cardall and his wife were living at William Street, I believe (from looking at the family above them) that it says 'Hackers' or 'Hackels' building but I cannot find any more information on this, the census states it was in the Birmingham St Thomas area of Birmingham.

If anyone could shed any light on this I would appreciate the assistance. Thanks for your time
Nicky

Thankyou so much Lyn

It can be tricky to find named buildings, especially early ones. The name can change or just disappear and the earliest map you're likely to get names on is not until 1890.

You can try to narrow it down by looking to see what numbers they come between or seeing if any residents of the buildings are on the next census on the same street with a slightly different but corresponding address.

The 1850 Post Office Directory says that William Street started at Islington, (near Five Ways)

There appear to be 8 families living in Hackets/Harkers Buildings in 1851 and of these 8 families 2 of them - Thomas' widow, Mary, & Samuel Ward - still seem to be on William St in 1861 and they seem to be in court 2, which appears to have 8 families in total also. Probably needs a little more checking but here's a map of court 2 from 1890...
