Please, does anyone know anything about this building? Birthplace of Barbara Cartland, among others.

There is some info on line but I can't find any contemporary references, like date of demolition etc.

In 1885 there was a Vectis Lodge with the same address where Norman Gwynne Chamberlain was born. So it was also known as "Lodge". Quote below for reference.

"19 August 1884 at Vectis Lodge, 37 Augustus Road, Edgbaston, Worcestershire, as the eldest child of Herbert Chamberlain (1846–1904) " Source: Magdalen College site.

In case you haven't seen this, it's a drawing of Vectis Lodge from Building News 1897 (it featured in an edition of Look and Learn.

Can we place the House/Lodge on a map please ? I suspect the house may have been demolished in the 1960s/70s. Was it then replaced by modern flats ? A map would be very helpful in finding a demolition date for the house. Thanks . Viv

I've just been through the 106 planning applications for Augustus Road on the BCC website. There is no application for no. 37 (edit: or Vectis, or 'adjoining Norfolk Road'.)

Now that's interesting. There were loads of adverts for flats in a building called "Woodbourne" in the 1960s. I notice the building next door was named "Woodbourne" and the modern buildings appear to take up some of Vectis land. I'm thinking the house may have been demolished when the flats were built (even if they're not actually on the footprint of the house). Below is the present day satellite view and an advert for the flats in 1962. Seems like they were built in the 1960s and theres a lot of them - so significant residential redevelopment on Vectis and adjoining land . Viv

I just tried looking for planning applications for Woodbourne - the earliest was 1974 but no details as too long ago. (Other than the applications were made by the Calthorpe Estate0. I don't know how far back the planning site goes.
 
Using your georeferenced map device Janice it looks like flats were built over some of the old Lodge. I expect the old Woodbourne house site and Vectis Lodge were acquired around the same time for the development Viv.
 
In 1957 and 1960 Matthew and Maud Forbes are listed on the eroll for 37 Augustus Road. In 1962 they have moved to flat in Moseley by the looks of things. This could be when the house was sold.
 
Yes Carolina, it must be an error in the advert.

Sounds to me like this development was probably in line with this Calthorpe Estates - John Madin plan of 1958. Viv

Had another look at the advert Carolina, I think the Vectis Lodge advert must relate to Lot 2 of the auction, not lot 1 (as in post #7 above). The auction properties are all squashed together in the ad, but Lot 2 makes more sense in relation to Vectis Lodge. Viv

They moved in sometime between the erolls of 1950 and 1955.
Birmingham Daily Post October 14 1950 (included was a full size billiard table).

Thanks for post #21 Janice, should have realised that !

If I'm reading this correctly post #17 and #22, suggests c1962/3 for the demolition to have taken place.

I've seen somewhere else Janice that a billiard room was specially built and wasn't part of the original build. Nice ! Viv.
 
A 1951 scam involving Vectis Lodge. Sounds like it was still a whole house at this time. Viv.

Planning history from 1948, detailed information from 2006. So there should be a planning application.
