Rowntrees Fire

High,all i can not remember the year,but rowntrees had a depot in kingbury rd,There was a fire and they were throwing boxes of sweets and jellies out,we had boxes of fruit gums jellies and kitkats.smoke flavered,any one else remember that day?. pete
 
I well remember that. We all strundled up the tyburn Road to see what we could salvage as kids. The Firemen told us off as I think they used the canal water to put the fire out. We took no notice anyway, and as Trigger in Only Fools and Horses said. 'It never did me any harm'

Lynda,hello,great reply.we went and got a pile of swag,i had a weelbarrow
and it was full of jelies boxes of gums pastels kitkats aeros.as you said the
firemen tried to keep us away,but no chance. ernie you missed a great day for kids bad day

I think it was about 1957/8,my father worked at Spencer Abbots next door,we also had Rowntrees for weeks.

Just stumbled upon this thread. I remember the fire & i also remember i got there too late, all the good goodies had gone, but i did find a part melted tin which rattled when i shook it. I couldn`t get the lid off so i took it home. When i did manage to prise the lid off, it was full of penneis & threppeny bits & tanners. I know i should have handed it in, but what kid could resist the temptation to go on a spending spree.
