thanks mike as the stone i have a photo of is dated 1898 that could rule out st james churchI read the following as meaning that the foundation stone for this church was laid in 1890 by Samposon Lloyd

ahh the date the stone was laid then mike...to me the wording still suggests a church rather than a brewery building and i think there was a couple along aston cross..lichfield road..aston road north..back to looking at churches nowThe lion brewery belonged to Rushtons , the firm being founded in 1890 at 69 Aston road North. Significantly the company was registered as a limited company on 3rd August 1898, after which they might wish to improve their buildings

Edward Ansell died in 1929 and was described as a great friend of the Blue Coat School, and also one time Chairman of the Aston Education Committee.Could be a church school with those words.
