Recollections of Old Birmingham, 1866.
In January 1866, over 150 years ago, there appeared in the Birmingham Daily Gazette an article titled "Recollections of Old Birmingham," I think it deserves a Thread of its own.
" ... many of the old buildings once famous in the town, but which have been destroyed by the ruthless march of modern improvements...(urges people)... to recall as far as possible a picture of the town in their younger days; to commit this to paper, so that their children might have some idea of what their native town was once like...”
The Gazette enlists the help of an lady who was the “epitome and chronicle" of the times. She seems to be the Kelly’s directory of the day! She knows every tavern and notes the changes of name, all the streets and shops and characters.
