Stretton Grove, Sydenham Road, Sparkbrook

My wife's Great Grandmother, Ellen Witts, lived with a relative, Norman stone, at Number 7. Phyllis and George Golding lived next door, maybe at number 6. My wife lived with her parents at number 39 Sydenham Road and her Grandparents and Aunt & Uncle lived a few doors a way. We haven't been that way for many years, so not sure if Stretton Grove is still there.

Stretton Grove is still there. It is the only Grove left and was renovated. If anyone knows the area of old, there were lots of groves off Sydenham and Walford Roads.

My nan lived at number 3 from about 1937 to the late 60's when she exchanged with a Mrs merchant who lived in Sydenham Road, a few doors down from Stretton grove.

Hi Asiya

Welcome to you, when was this and was there something you wanted to know?

Hi Asiya

Just as a matter of interest.
The houses in Stretton Grove were part of a 37 houses development built by the Alldays & Onions company in 1894 to house its workers.

Mrs. Merchant lived at number 31 Sydenham Road. This is the lady my nan exchanged houses with. I am not sure why nan agreed to exchange as the house was exactly the same as the one she lived in Stretton Grove. I lived in Saltley and used to get the number 8 bus every other Sunday to visit nan. Alldays and Onions was just over the wall at the bottom on nan's garden in Stretton Grove.

Hi all. Betty and Ken lived at 45 Sydenham Road from about 1954 to about 1968 or so. Floss and Billy Price were at 39 Sydenham Road. Ethel, Bill and their daughter Sheila Sharples lived at 35. Mr & Mrs Dent were at 37. 49 was Mr & Mrs Brown. Mr and Mrs Harris lived two houses down from my wife’s Nan at number 9 or 10 Stretton Grove. Their granddaughter, Joanne Harris lived at 3 Stretton Grove or thereabouts. Number 5 was Mr & Mrs Rhodes.

I have the Electoral Roll for 1955 when my mom and dad lived in Stretton Grove with nan. The Harris's lived at number 9. At that time number 5 was occupied by Ernest and Ivy Thomas. My brother used to play with their son when we went to visit. My nan lived at number 3 and next door was Mr. Claxton. He was a sign writer and I always remember that the number was painted on his door really neatly. My nan's step-sister (Olive Johnson nee Tooms) lived at the very first house in Sydenham Road, Walford Road end, number 137.

Was she married to Lol and her mother had the nickname Crin?

my nan wasn't married (well she was but that's another story). She left Sydenham Road when she was unable to care for herself, went to live with a daughter of hers and died in the 1970's. Did you mean Mrs. Merchant marrying Lol?
