Mike you maybe able to help me while living at 74 William St 1955-69 , I heard a couple of tales that said that where our house was it was originally a public house some years ago , don't know how far back you can go but the story goes it was called The Monkey House. It may have been true but there again perhaps they might have been referring to the way we used to look in those days .

Have made new thread for this post as it is not Granville St. Cannot find any reference to a pub at 74 William St, but up to sometime after 1921 there is listed a beerhouse at either 71 or 72 Granville St (probably the building was 71-72) which was named the New Inns. "The Monkey House" is, I believe, used in several places as the local nickname of pubs, so this was presumably the case here.
 
Hi there, my name is Thomas and I'm looking to see if anyone remembers the Parry family that used to live on William Street - the names William and Florence (more commonly known as Bill and Floss) and they had two children Albert and Sheila. Floss' parents Harry and Leah Jones used to live there as well; Bill and Floss lived in William Street from about the 1930's to the 1950's when they moved to Tennant Street for a couple of years before moving to King's Norton. Harry and Leah Jones lived in William Street for a few years from about 1915/1916 until they both passed away. If anyone remembers any members of these two families a response would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Thomas I lived at 74 William St between 1955-69 . I knew of a Floss Parry that lived a bit further up on the other side of the st . If my memory serves me right she used to live up and entry , unfortunately I can't tell you anymore . It was more or less a hello/goodbye Mrs Parry as an when our paths crossed.

Sorry I couldn't have been more help, they were good old days back then . Thomas Strangely enough I can see Floss now as though it was yesterday , black hair gathered back a pink or red top , black pencil type skirt
 
Hi there, I was born after she passed away so I visually can't remember her but my family have quite a few memories of her. I have attached a picture below and you should be able to spot Floss from your description as the woman in the middle and her husband Bill is standing to the right of her.

Yes that's Floss , funny when someone like yourself strikes a chord the memories of that period come flooding back . Thanks for showing the pic Thomas . Unfortunately can't help with your Granville St enquiry , have you any pics of your g/parents from Granville St
 
The funny thing is that although the area is very different now than it was then - I now live in the area off Tennant Street/William Street.
 
Also there was another family member who used to live at 1 back of 62 William Street from the 40's until the late 60's/early 70's - his name was Leonard Jones and his wife was called Edith - I do not have a photo of him but I wondered if you might remember him?

I went around that area on this streetview map or whatever its called where our house used to be is no longer visible its blocked off so no through way to Granville St as was

Yes I very much do , they were almost like my second parents . I fetched errands for them I was in their house every evening Monday to Saturday reason being we did not have a tv I used to watch it every night till about 8.30pm . They used to give me half a crown every weekend for fetching the errands, and give me something to eat every night Len got in from Lucas's. Weekends they used to have a drink in The Crown on Broad St, the last I saw them was in the 70's when me and the wife went into the Crown we sat with them having a chat catching up with each other . Len was tall but very wiry(thin)Edith was a very attractive woman, had a sister named Violet . Edith/ Violets mother lived in Hingestion St, have yo a photo of Edith ?
 
Do you know where they moved to? - All I know is that Len passed away in 1974 (aged 60) and his wife Edith passed away in 2009 (aged 95)

I'm very sorry to hear that Thomas , unfortunately I don't know where they moved to , those nights in the Crown I don't know whether they were still in William St or if they had moved they might have said but with the passing of time the brain fades . One thing I can say about them is they were fine upstanding people, truly people you would be proud to say you knew them RIP
 
It is nice to know that someone like that existed in my family. It makes me proud to have someone like that in my family history.

Thomas one thing I did forget last night was , your Uncle and Aunt used to work at Lucas Gt King St. When Christmas came around in the late 50's I had to assume the surname Jones , reason being Lucas used to arrange a Christmas party/ panto for their employees and they got me onto that I went for about three years on the trot very enjoyable . Ediths mother who lived in Hingestion St her surname was Tranter, thought I'd pass that on
