hi, i dont know if anyone can help, but here goes.

i live on the site of an old chain factory on the corner of grange road and hawkes street.

i know it was there because i remember living next door to it, and being absolutly creeped out by this old building, it was demolished in around 1991, but i am not sure exactly.

the co-op i am on built 2 flats there and i live in one of them, i am just curious to weather anyone knows about it, and where i could get pictures from, it was demolished before i really apreciated the history of the area and i am struggling to find any info

thanks

nikki

Nikki,

I am not entirely sure but I think the factory in Grange Road at Hawkes Stret, Small Heath was Butlers Ltd. We have one or two members who lived in Grange Road and can probably tell you whether I am right or not. There was certainly a Butlers Ltd in Grange Road.

Butlers Lamps in Grange Rd was taken over by Joseph Lucas many years ago, they made headlamps for cars not chains. Len.

Len,

You are right of course. Butlers made lamps. I cannot remember a factory that made chains in Grange Road or, indeed, any other factory at all in Grange Road but I am trying to cast my mind a long time back.

well i have been to see the chairwoman of the co-op i am on, and she cant remember either, all she knows is it had a sign on with the words "chains & links".

it had been derelict for atleast 15 years before demolishing, but it still had a lot of stock and equipment in which they had to get rid of first, every now and then there would be paperwork strewn across the road from when kids would go in and trash it.

i even looked through old pictues that i have to try and find it, but i only have pictures from the back,

i remember the wood work was blue, so blue doors, window frames and so forth,

and it had a massive tree in the back in what looked like a very small yard,

The factory WAS Butlers. I lived in Hawkes street as a kid. Our Mom used to send us up to Butlers to search through the scrap metal for a particular blank that was the same size as a shilling piece to put in the gas meter.
Happy memories.

hi can anyone help me i am trying to bring back memories for my grandad who was born in Hawkes Street in the 1930's i found on here a list of people that lived on his street and managed to print some of them off but not all of the them, but now he would like them all, so does anyone know where i can find the link. Hi, Josie, we to lived in Hawkes Street at number 37! Our house was 1back of 37. I’ve still got moms rent books from the time the council took over the property. My name is Steve Cridge and we lived therein the early 60’s.

A 1937 aerial view showing 1bk37
The aerial photo is really interesting to me as I lived at 191 Grange Road as a child up to1953. The rear of the building with a tree next to the Grange Cinema I knew as a bomb site and our home was third one after in the row of terrace buildings. Thanks Tinpot
