My best mate got married there in 1973/4....I was his best man.....never again......

Back in the 1950s when I worked for Watsons in Villa Street I used to service the priest's car and there was a young junior priest who rode a motor bike who was also a casual customer, my foreman and his family were regular worshipers there.E.

Dolly they're lovely photos, thanks. We used to go there when we lived in Hunters Road in the early/late fifties. Is the convent still there, do you know?

Eric do you remember the priest? Can't recall his name now; was it Dermott? If I remember rightly he was a big, grey-haired, heavy-set man

the last pic is the convent, still going strong, the convent has its own virtual website st marys convent handsworth .something,so the lady over the road said

Dolly what memories those photos bring back. Thanks a lot, they're lovely. How do you do it? You always seem to have already been there when people need photos!

Cheers.

I was wondering what the other road was called; now I know. It's not a bad little shack is it!

Can't remember his name Harbourne but the name Dermott doesn't ring any bells, he used to drive a Morris 10, hit a dog with it one day and smashed the radiator grill, used some not very priestly language.:) .E.

Will have to ask mum but I don't think she'll remember. Her memory's not so good these days; something like my own. LOL

Bump

Does anybody remember the Bretts of Villa street, who were regular worshipers here?

Can't say I do. I remember the Gunns, the McDermotts, McGarrells, Armstrongs, Hagans and that's all.

anyone remembe the Browns on villa rd. Their dad Charlie used to play the ttrumpet in the local pubs. Frank used to be the dj at the Summerhill roller rink. There were eight brothers and sisters. They lived on top of wilets fruit and veg store. Does anyone know the names of any of the other shops on that row? we are talking 1961, until themoved to harbourne park rd in about 64.
be greatful for anything.
Also a nu by the name of Sister Mary Austin, who I think taught at st mary's primary school. Any photos of convent and school would be fantastic.
