Every week is sausage week for me. I love a banger, or as Terry Wogan called them " snorkers". Being over weight ( obese, fat, excess critical mass....I don't care, who wants to live for ever and be a burden on the government ? ) they are forbidden fruit.
It has to be sausages with skins, from the butcher, baked slow in the oven, served with mashed potato, mushy peas and onion gravy. A sausage sandwich for a snack. Sadly cold sausage gives me heartburn and can give me problems swallowing it. An English Breakfast is sadly lacking if the pork sausage is missing.
What ever happened to Pork and Beef sausages ? I don't think I have seen any for ten years or more. A cheap banger, did they lose out in the terms of snobbery ?

Dammit...it always happens on these food threads.....now I am hungry.

hi arkrite
hope you are well you made my mouth water
on the subject of pork and beef bangers you can still buy them from iceland frozen my lad eats them by the bag with his beans and sausage rolls
which is a special order fro pork farms he buys them in boxes and stores then in the deep freezer as they are hard to get ff
take care and have a good day best wishes astonion

Alan and Richard,
You are both close to Ledbury, where there are two butcher's shops, that have won prizes for the excellence of their sausage's,they have a variety of flavoured types,or just plain delicious "bangers".Their home made faggots and locally killed meat are also very good.Go on,give them a try...enjoy.

and my old dutchess just the home made faggotts and peas and we certaily love our sausages
on the subject of home made faggotts the last time i enjoyed the old faggotts and peas was along time ago
and it was gibsons fish and chip shop next to victoria rd police st

Just walk in Astonian its just like an ordinary shop except that in the main you can only buy produce that is in season as most of their wares are locally sourced. Some superb cheeses made by Fowlers of Earlswood.
So pop in even if its just for a look around, lots of my family before me have shopped there.

Thanks for the link Mike..gonna go and have a look this week

Just noticed your location maggieuk, one of the butchers lived in Frankley but he had to retire due to rhumatoid arthritis. Try a hot pork bap from the hot counter, they are to die for. Just on bit of advice, avoid between 12 noon and 2 o clock as just down the road is the big insurance place that used to be The Britannic and it seems the people who work there descend on there for lunch.

Living on the Herefordshire / Worcestershire border I am lucky in being spoiled for choice when it comes to butchers and specialist delicatessens. If there is a chance of a bright day on a weekend the stepson gets his barbecue going and sausages are top of the list. Despite the big manufacturers claims their sausages, just like their pies , bacon and faggots cannot beat the butchers products. Yes all sorts of stuff can end up in them but it is a traditional way of using odd bits of the pig left over. Only using "prime cuts" as some advertise leads to bland tasting bangers and pies. They are not like Granny used to make.

When we had our touring caravan we spent many weekends at Eastnor Castle in the 80's. Ledbury market was wonderful all that sausage and cheese....I miss it very much! The craft shops and old school wonderful.

Having come from a family of butchers I know all about sausage.

hi.all just tryd some blackpudding sausages.yuk they where disgusting.i give them my dog,the way he his smacking his chops he thought different

British sausages are the best. I mistakenly bought turkey sausage with maple, thinking they'd make a nice Autumnal Brunch for Sunday. God were they sickly. There was, I think about 24 in the pack (sausages over here are very thin, thinner than thin in England) so I tried the other half of the pack again, but, this time with tomatoes, hoping to take the sweetness away, and they were just as bad as I remembered.
One of the first thing on our 'to do list' when we get back to Brum is have a sausage sandwich. Red sauce for me, brown for my husband, nothing for my son, with the bread dipped in the drippings. Yum yum pigs bum!

hi.i am game for a laugh, but i dropped a clanger buying that banger.no more of them.next to try is pork and leek.

BTW does anyone have a recipe for sausages that I could use over here to get a taste of home? I've got a Mrs. Beaton's recipe which I've tried but it's a bit 'vague' and I wasn't sure I'd made them right.

Type in search and browse this thread. Len. "Re: Sausages just ain't what they used to be."

Walter Smith do a black pepper sausage and although I love the taste I can only eat one otherwise you end up drinking half the night. What a variety of sausages Bowketts have. Jean.

I'll have a pound of those then or should it be half a kilo?
