I have been scanning some old slides to the computer and came across this one. I think it was taken in the early 1970's. Does anyone know where it is?

They look like the sort of houses thats over Lozells/Pery Barr way. Looking at the street sign it could be Victoria Rd? But I am probably way off track. Is it definetly in B'ham?

It almost looks like Victoria Road, Aston, but the road layout isn't quite right. What about the quinton by-pass, where you turn off for Quinton Cemetery, etc?
Been a few years since I was that way

This is where I was thinking. Victoria Rd/Birchfield Rd. But looking at it, I'm not so sure now.

The slide is taken from an "odd"angle me thinks. Making it harder to recognize. I had a look at the spires in the background and
one of them I'm sure is Icknield Street School in Hockley. I would say the same as paulyx's first post. Victoria Road/ Albert Road/FrederickRd.

That's my old school in the background (middle and right) - Aston Grammar. Aston Expressway in the dip from left to right, an insulting remnant of Victoria Road disappearing lower right towards Lichfield Road. The Victorian house fronts on the right are in what is left of Albert Road, with bits of Frederick Road visible behind it. The top of the (poplar?) trees on the right form the avenue in Aston Park leading from Frederick Road to Aston Hall (off the picture).
No trace of Park Road at all, nor of Aston Baths, of course.

Thank you for all your replies. My dad took the photo and sadly he passed away last year so I can't ask him. He used to work at Ansells brewery so it could very well be Aston. Looks to me like he took it from a window.

I've just looked out an old OS map and a modern street atlas. The parapet, bottom left in your dad's picture, is indeed the edge roof of the Ansells buildings fronting on to Upper Portland Street. Park Road ran roughly where the Expressway is today, but at a slightly different angle, as it joined Aston Cross and the tower of Aston Church in a straight line, whereas the expressway runs west of Aston Cross and East of the church. They made such an elaborate junction at the Victoria Road Crossing that it would have been well nigh impossible to link it to Upper Portland Street, so the latter was made into a cul-de-sac off Lichfield Road, and it now known as Portland Street.

What scanner did you use to scan the slides, negative adapter?

My father-in-law lent me his slide scanner gadget. Its make was ION I think. You put the slides in the bottom and it scans them to a memeory card or straight to your computer. You can also do negatives. They came out very well and brought back lots of happt memories.

Thanks, I know some scanners come with a built in attachment, but I think I know the type you mean...
