Dear Members

This is a long shot I know :) but does anyone know about a Restaurant between 1940 to 1944 in the centre of Birmingham owned by a Greek Cypriot called George Adams also known as Adamou ? It could have been in the Edgbaston area...........

A Cypriot guy named George had a restaurant on the Hagley Road Edgbaston. Part of a hotel I think.

That will be the place as my mother who was a listed as a "Restaurant Waitress" on my birth certificate in March 1944, her address is listed as 76 Wheeleys Road, Edgbaston.

Now I wonder what was the name of the restaurant ???

the 1944 directory lists that address as
76 Donellan Michl
which i interpret as Michael Donellan.
In the 1945 electoral roll there are 5 people listed there. no michael donnellan, but a Bridget Donnelan amongst them. sounds like a lodging house or bed sits

Many thanks, I do have the first electoral role after the war in May 1945 for 76 Whelleys Road showing my mother there....... but it is the name of the restaurant would be good so that perhaps then I can track down someone who remembers it worked there or had a meal there and remembers my mother and I suspect my father who was listed as a waiter in early 1945......

Sorry Geoff., I first went to Georges Restaurant in the 60s I think - though I know he had been there some time I doubt it would have been that long?
I guess "George" would be a common enough name for a Greek Cypriot Restaurant so I may be disappointing you. Maybe someone will look it up in Kellys?
 
hi all
anyone remember lyons corner cafe near the council house?? my nan would take my sister and me occassionly we were allowed one cake each with our tea, once my nan went to the toilet and we ate 3 cakes each she went crackers when she got the bill of 7/6 instead of half a crown.

Perhaps somone had access to Kelleys :rolleyes: and can look up Resturants in the Edgbaston area owned by George Adams or Adamou between 1041 and 1944 ? I would be very very grateful
