Da Roache - William and Minnie

MadMomma

Wannabe Brummie Again
I'm interested in finding anything about Bill and Minnie Da Roache. They were the god parents of my late uncle Kenneth Donald Hulls b 1931, Aston.

Bill and Minnie were, apparently, friends of my maternal grand parents Charles and Annie Hulls nee Ridley. Charlie and Annie lived in the Cowper Street/Elkington Street area of Aston at the time of their son's birth. I have a number of photographs that place the friendship going back to at least the early twenties. Charlie and Annie were both born in 1899. Charlie's family and he were in the shoe trade (although Charlie worked on the trams after the Great War) and Annie's family were pearl button workers from Chain Walk in Lozells and she was a capstan operator, certainly in later life but possibly from the Great War onwards. I don't know how they met the Da Roaches or if the connection is from when Charlie served in the Great War.

I know nothing about Bill and Minnie Da Roache and am not even sure that the surname spelling is correct.

I've tried both ancestry.com and findmypast.com but unfortunately have yet to strike luck!

Any help or suggestions on where to go next would be appreciated.

Regards
Avril

His birth perhaps:

Births Mar 1898 (>99%) De Roach William Major Aston 6d329

As well as someone with the same name....so it makes you wonder if there is a connection:

Births Jun 1840 (>99%) De Roach William Mager Birmingham 16306
Deaths Jun 1893 (>99%) De Roach William Major 53 Birmingham 6d97
Another Wiliam De Roach died in 1899 aged 38

Unfortunately Minnie Worrall is a more popular name- so don't know when she was born...

Maybe sks can take a look on the electoral roll and see where Minnie and William were in relation to your family.....?

Dear MadMomma,

I can't help you with your specific query, but I wonder if you can tell me whether you know of a Gerald Da Roche, who was in my class at Loxton Street School, Duddeston, during the 1939-1942 period?

I am interested because I am certain that my mother once commented that Gerald was related (probably distantly!) to us...

I was never able to verify this and would be pleased if you happened to know anything.

With regards,

There was a Joan de Roche? who went to Burlington Street School, Aston, she contacted me once on another site, I believe she lived in Sutton Street or nearby. She emigrated to Australia and would be about 71/72 years old now.

That sounds as if it could be Billy Da Roach who worked at Rootes Motors ( Spares ) on the Coventry Road in the 60s.

SylviaSayers,

Many thanks - but I know of only a Gerald, and I have no idea whether he had any siblings or other relatives around...!

Thanks again, anyway,

I have learnt that Bill and Minnie lived in Riele Crescent (not sure of the spelling) off Victoria Road so I'm not sure if they are related to your Gerald. This would be in the 50's. Also Uncle Ken (Bill and Minnie's god son - which started the whole thread off) also went to Burlington Street School!

MadMomma: Thanks again, Avril, but as SylviaSayers says, if your suggestions lived down Aston I doubt whether Gerald would have travelled all the way to Duddeston to attend Loxton Street School.

Not a direct answer to your query but in my researches I turned up an Elizabeth de Roach who was married to a Sheldon Cox Gray on 15 Oct 1810. They had a son John, possibly also in 1810. Sheldon Gray was a wine and spirt merchant who was in High Street, Dudley in 1845, and he died in Walsall in Q2 1847.

My Dads best Friend was Billy De Roach who must have been born in Aston about 1920. He Married Mary and they lived in Chain Walk Lozells untill 60's. Mary was my mom's stepsister and Mary's daughter is still alive.

My grandmother Annie Hulls (nee Ridley) b 1899, lived in Chain Walk until her marriage in 1926 maybe that's where the connection is with the De Roache family - we may never know!
