having copied and pasted part of the original message I thought it would be highlighted but it all looks like my own message.

Copy and paste will indeed make it all look like your own post.

Just click on the "quote" at the bottom right of the post you wish to quote - as I did with yours. You can then just delete anything you don't wish to include in the quote.
