Another one to go on the site soon. Has anyone enjoyed a pint in here over the years?

Soho Tavern - Gib Heath/Winson Green [pic attached]

This pub was erected on the corner of Park Road and Factory Road. As is sometimes the case with pubs built near railways, the Soho Tavern was once owned by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company who, along with other railway companies, had taken over the L.& N.W.R. [London and North West Railway]. It was probably after the property was acquired by Mitchell's and Butler's that the Soho Tavern received a facelift. The exterior tiling, door mouldings and art deco lettering is typical of inter-war renovations. This photograph was taken on November 22nd 1961 when John Davis was the licensee. He had taken over the licence earlier in the year on July 20th 1961. His tenure was short and he was succeeded by Percy Clark in the following Spring. Bass sold the Soho Tavern to Enterprise Inns but it became a free house in the mid-1980s when the Raj family acquired the pub.

i didn't go in but a lot of my family did. We lived right by there in Factory rd ,opposite side though. My father in law had a builder yard round the corner in Queens Avenue called Bert Dalton & Son and he would often go with the men after work for a pint there, also the Black Eagle which was a house away from mine almost. I have heard that it has become a rather good place to eat now.

The black eagle is a very good place to eat and cheap, there is always a welcome there from the owners,

Thanks Patty
It's one thing having cold facts and figures but a pub's history comes to life with the sort of information you have supplied. We can now try to envisage your father-in-law enjoying a few beers with his employees after a day spent on a building site. As for the Black Eagle - it has enjoyed a renaissance under the leadership of former actor Tony Lewis. Here's a few dates and people of this pub if it helps to jog your memory....
1954 - 1957 Ruth Smith
1957 - 1959 William T.Wallis
1959 - 1961 Charles C.Treadwell
1961 - 1971 Beatrice Smith
1971 - 1976 Norman W.Mansell
1976 - 1985 Edwin B.Guest
1985 - 1987 Angela and Gian Chand
1987 - 1989 Sokhi and Kamaljit Paul
1989 - 1990 John W.Morris

Kind regards

Kieron are those names of the landlords or ladies of the Black eagle? if so I lived in the square that was set back from the road just below the Eagle it must have been 66 to70 or 71. I can remember a lady taking over which could have been Beatrice, I remember her having very red hair in fact I used to do it at my hairdressers just down Park rd at the bottom . It was know as the flat and my place was called Dubbarys

Yes Patty, these are the licensees. Trivia fact: some pubs actually traded as both boozer and hairdresser's in the 19th century. Also, when I bought my house I was puzzled by the wiring in the front room. It was only a few years later that I discovered the original owners operated a hairdressing salon in the building.
Kind regards
