Gone, but not forgotten.

Phil,
Is it Corporation Street opposite the Law Courts and there's a serious criminal being sentenced who may try to escape or be "sprung " when they bring him out so there will be a heavy police escort to Winson Green. (Been reading too many penny dreadfulls again)
Mike

motorman-mike. I will agree that it is opposite the Law Courts, as for the rest of the story I await with interest. Also those cop cars and the date.

No correct answers yet, but Mike I like the idea. Its looks the ideal time for the felon to make his break all the coppers must be on a tea break.

Phil

I thought it was the first police spot check....

But, all registered YF..., a London Central series. So...Guess... the first batch of police cars at a press launch (or the equivalent in those days), possibly Birmingham made cars?
Can't recognise the type, they look vaguely Morris (which were made in Oxford).

A second look shows the cars to be Metropolitan Police cars so would tally with Lloyd's info on reg numbers. (See large notices on the back of the cars). Is the felon from the Smoke then Phil or are they up for an inter Police football match with buffet at Steelhouse Lane after the match.
City of Birmingham Police - Central Division. 6
Metropolitan Police - Scotland Yard 1st XI. 0

ahh phil. you know im absolutely hopeless at this so over to all you experts. wales.

Lloyd and Mike

You are getting close, but you are still hovering around the edges. I think the cars were made in Bradford and they are all made by the same manufacturer. Yes they are owned by the London Metropolitan Police

What is the connection with with Birmingham and why are they where they are. If you can work out where they are the rest might just click in.

Phil

lol @ mike and the buffet, i like the score line tho :) i'm going to die with anticipation on this one, someone please put us out of our misery lol

I think I might have this one - I think its John Bright Street in 1927. The Metropolitan Police purchased 50 Jowett four-seaters from Hydes!

You obviosly have the same book as me, as your answer is correct down to the last word. Well Done.

Phil

Phil if this is Johnbright St is that the building on the corner at the far right that housed Chetwyns & the Whiskey?

A total coincidence.... having just looked at your post, I was looking through Memories of Birmingham and came across the same picture. Couldn't resist posting and getting it right! lol.

Were these cars en route from Bradford to London and the drivers overnighting in Brum at the Cobden Hotel which was in Corporation Street originally? Well, they might have been!

Mike your guess is as good as mine, perhaps the boys in blue had come to collect them and had decided to have a good night out in Brum drinking good beer instead of the rubbish served up in London.

Bob

If you want a picture of Chetwins I'll post one for you on the Whiskey a Go Go thread.
