The only one of these pubs I ever used just the once was was the Black Horse, Northfield. About six of us landed in there one night and we went in the large lounge at the side. The smell of damp was overpowering and after a couple of pints we left and walked down to the Bell. A Davenports house at the time but the keg bitter was great.

Another strange pub around there at the time was a new pub under the shopping centre with the entrance on the Bristol rd down a flight of stairs. I went in there a few times, but there was never anybody in there. I can't think of the name, its been lost in the mist of time.

Thanx a lot Phil... I did not have The Maypole or the other two you have posted.
However I do have pic's of The other Woodman and Black Horse he played at around Nechells way. I do not have the Golden Cross though.

On saying that though he did play at these two also, I used to go around Brum with him after school and on Saturdays to raise money for 'The Blind Institute' selling packs containing; A Writing Pad, Pen, Pencil an envelopes in Summer and Christmas Cards in November, he got a small % of the money from what we sold .
On Saturdays he would go in the local of whatever area we had been selling in at the time and play the piano at lunchtime. I would be allowed to sit just inside the door of most 'Smoke-rooms' with pop and crisps and hold on to his 'White stick' for him. Any money he got for playing he and I shared between us, Mom and the other two kids never knew we did this it was our secret, Dad said "It's us who braved the cold and rain to do it"
.
For those of you who don't know, I posted this as part of a post on another thread to do with Gosta Green/Nechells ...
......now have pic's of the five B'Ham pubs that my Dad who died in 1969 mostly played the piano for the locals in.
The Prince of Wales Dymoke St
The Emily Arms Emily St
The New Inns Gt Lister St
The Old Nelson Rupert St
The 'Brit' Brittania Proctor st
He also played in many more all around Brum such as The Maypole,The Golden Cross, The Black Horse and The Woodman, but the top five were as above. ....
Thanx again Phil for posting the pic's for me.:)

Pomgolian,
Here's another view of the Maypole for you and if you take in pubs from just outsiDe Brum, the Saracens Head at Shirley. My Father in Law at various times got his ticket from the Maypole, Prince of Wales, Bagnell Arms and the Warstock so would fall back on the Saracens now and again. (his tickets were always "because of the others" but we never found out what the others got up to).

Mike

I passed by the Bagnell today and lo and behold its another MacDonalds. When did that happen?

Phil,
I reckon MacDonalds has been there best part of 5 years now. The pub closed about two or three years earlier and was badly vandalised as well as set on fire several times. The same thing happened to the Valley on Yardley Wood Road, in fact the Valley was on fire so often that the firemen at Brook Lane Fire Station looked on it as a regular fire practice outing.
Have got a Post Card of the Warstock pub but will post it on the See B'ham by Post Card Thread as my next contribution there.
Mike

Pomgolian here is a picture of the Golden cross albeit only from the side, you can see the name though, Im sure Ive got one somewhere taken from the front Ill keep on looking.

Yeah the Dukes a rough house , the Travellers Rest was on the opposite side of the road another bad place.

The Maypole , in the bar 70's having a tot ,when a Navie who had been barred earlier came back a shovel and hit and damaged every tap and pump on the bar
