The cresta club

formula t

master brummie
I remember going to a club in Solihull i think it was called the cresta club it was where the ice rink is now. We went to see David Whitfield. Does anyone else remember the club.

I remember it well formula t,it was very popular in its day.We had a lot of works do's there.I cant remember many acts but i do recall Bob Monkhouse being very good and a bit blue.

I remember the Cresta club well, used to go there nearly every sunday night in it's early days. Sunday night was the first night and only cost ten shillings to go in. I now live very close to where it was , pity it gone.

I was taken there the first time on my 18th birthday to see lenny the lion, he called every one up on the stage who's birthday it was and I run out (believe it or not I was shy then lol)
Next time I went to see Roger Whittiker, was it in hoabs moat lane or something like that

I remember going to the Cresta Club to see Donald pearse it was my mom & dads ruby wedding & they called them up on to the stage & my dad sang roses are blooming in Piccady.. you don't hear that song anymore but it always brought a tear to my eyes. I also remember seeing Norman Wisdom & I think Bruce Forthsight there.

I remember going with my late Wife, must be over 20 years ago to see her favourite singer Frankie Laine, I believe the Bachelors and Frank (its the way I tell 'em) Carson were the accompanying acts . A good show and a good meal too ! Eric

I remember the name, I think it may have been just before my time. I never went there, so, I don't know where it was.

I visited the Cresta many times, I could never understand why it closed down. You had to book a couple of weeks in advance to get a table for more than two at weekends, even shortly before it closed. The food wasn't great but it was eatable and the beer was OK and it wasn't too expensive. I suppose the trouble was the same as it was with all these types of places, the acts or (the agents) were asking for too much money to make it viable.

Phil

The venue is still there, its a snooker/pool club now called Rileys. Had some good nights there nowhere near as exspencive as the clubs in town and allways top name acts. I think Phil has hit the nail on the head with agents fees.

I used to go there every week usually on a Sunday it was a bit cheaper they had a good veriety of acts with some good comedians we had a few stakes there and the odd visit to the casino. it was above the ice rink.

I went there often i had friends who worked there and we used to get concessionary tickets,We seen Bob Monkhouse, Hermans Hermits, Alvin Stardust, lots of famous faces.

I was corting at that time and it was a good place to take someone and have a good night out and without having to go into town.

Remember going with my Mom and Dad, think it was a do from "The Met" a neighbour worked their, it was to see Tony Christie, would have been mid 70's, and yes was above the ice ring, think it was Solihulls alternative to "The Night Out" in Birmingham but on a smaller scale. Think there is a picture somewhere will try and find it and post

Perhaps it was the barn I went to then as it wasn't above anything but it was on the way yo the airport way, I think I was told Ruby Murray had something to do with it as well, I am going to confuse you all now as usual lol

No it was very posh, I didn't like curries in those days Mike it was about 1965, up's I've given my age away now

Maybe it was the Cavendish Patty that was over that side, they had La Dolce Vita in town, and the Cavendish over Yardley way
the acts would appear at the Cavendish first, then jump in a car into town and do La Dolce Vita, i always get them two mixed up

No I am sure it was the Barn thinking about it, someone must have been or am I getting the first signs lol

This Club is on another thread could be Skating Rinks or Nightclubs.

But I saw Guy Mitchell, Max Wall & Mat Monro there in the 1960s

Isnt the Barn on Stratford Road at Monkspath ? could be on the way to the airport deoending on where you started out from :(:(

There was a club by the Airport....... but it did have a bit of a reputation !!!! i cant believe you went there Patty. Max

Ahh Patty , was it attached to a hotel near Hockley Heath. Glad it wasnt the one by the airport LOL max

If i remember rightly, there was a club of sorts at the bottom of the lane which is just past the turning for the old Elmdon airport.

The premises used to belong to the aero club before they erected another ex nissan hut somewhere behind the excelsior hotel.

There was also a night club/disco, of sorts, in the basement of the Arden motel further along the Coventry Road.

Remember The Cresta very well, had our Daughter's 21st there back in 1981.there was a comedian on Aidan J Harvey, but never heard anything of him since.

Jemina
