Does anyone recall Studley Street, Sparkbrook before it was bombed. Particularly the end of terrace hucksters shop. Any memories, stories or pictures please about the families and life there. Thanks

Hi Vernon

I can't tell you anything about Studley St before the war, but I knew a few families that came out of the Studley St after the war, Queen St, Alfred St, Ladypool Rd block of houses. My best mate was brought up in Alfred St. I have a few photos. One of children playing in Studley St. a couple of The Gate public house at different times and one of the aftermath of the bombing.

The Alfred Street bomb site was our play ground and collected house bricks that my mate’s dad, Tony Reid, used to build a big extension, he gave an old cycle frame as reward; used it as my first racing bike. Also the bomb site was used for cycle speedway attracting great crowds.

Great pics!

The lad in the photograph at the bottom of the children playing in the street (Studley Street) is Lenny Preston who married Rita Preston (nee View attachment 89604 Hayward from Mole Street) and lived in the same street after their wedding. Lenny is my uncle and his father lived in the yard down from him where he kept his pigeons. At the end of Studley Street (Ladypool Road end) there used to be a vegetable cart just down from the Gate public house which was my uncle's local. He would take us in the gardens at the back...Sadly the gardens are now a factory or some sort of building slapped on top.

Hi Peaky,

I had several friends that lived in Studley St, Queen St and Alfred St that I went to school with at Dennis Rd. I used to drink in the Gate when Jack Blower was the gaffer before he bought the Fish at Offenham. I can't say that I knew your relations but I have no doubt that my mate Alf would have known them.

My mother lived in Studley street, I remember a pub called the Gate. Her maiden name was " Warwick " does any one have any memories of more information of this street from around the 1950s . When visiting I was around 6-7 years old. Thanks for reading this post.

Hi Bronson

I knew a few people that lived in Studley Street and I used The Gate myself in the early 60's though the name Warwick doesn't come to mind. I think Studley St was pretty well bombed in the war so in the 50's there wasn't a great deal of it left. By the way the Gate still remains today, but it's a community centre of some sort. Here are photos of the bombing and some photos of the Gate.

This is the other photo of Studley Street I was looking for it shows The Queen St end of Studley St, when I knew Studley Street all that corner in view was taken up by an Engineering factory called Brason & Co (Pressings),

Hi Vernon. My paternal grandmother, Emily Perkins - known as Pem - lived at number 3 back of 27 Studley Street immediately after the war with my grandfather Arthur William Perkins. Pem's story is typical of many women of the age because this was her third marriage. Her first marriage ended with the death of her first husband Charles Morgan in the first months of WWI;leaving her with three children. She then married one of her neighbours Arthur Startin but he succumbed to wounds suffered at the end of WWI leaving Pem to marry my paternal grandfather Arthur William Perkins. He was a widower who had seven children from his first marriage. The pair subsequently went on to have three children together, John, Nellie and Walter (my dad). At some stage, they moved from 3 back of 27 to 35 Studley Street where my dad was brought up.As a young man my dad, pictured at the back of Studley Street just after the war; became involved in some of the illegal bookmaking activities in the area, but chose the safer path of becoming a plumber.

At the end of the WWII, my auntie Nellie was still living in Studley Street with her new husband Robert Gosling and Pem. And one of my grandfather's children from his first marriage, Harry Perkins went on to run The Gate Inn at the end of Studley Street with his wife Theodora Perkins.

Hope this is helpful.

Rob Perkins

I must find time to go and see him, is he still living in Sheldon. I knew his Mom violet and Ronnie who looked after her as well. I also knew Tankie & Tippler and Coco sorry the only ones I knew by their real names were Alfie, Ronnie and Jerry.

Hi Peaky, just going through my family history material and have come across your uncle's name. Lenny Preston was my dad's (Walter Perkins) best man at his wedding to my mom (Beryl Perkins). He witnessed the marriage on certificate.

Hi Phil

The photo of The Gate beer garden on Studley St is very interesting to me.

Could you tell me the date it was taken and anything about the occasion ? it looks like a celebration with the hats they are wearing ! What a great photo.

My family lived on Queen St, Studley St, Highgate Rd and Ombersley Rd from early 1900 up to 1965.

Bill Ladbrook( i believe is the Guy at the front) and his wife Hilda, and also Ellen Baxter (Ladbrook) on front Row and there are others I can put names to.

I have other relatives who lived on the same roads e.g. Annie and Edward Crow and ingrams.
Also, Charles Kelly but he passed before 1930.

If anyone has any info on this photo or came across the above names that would be amazing.

Thanks
Si

My wife's Grandmother, was bombed out of 57 Queen Street in the blitz, later she lived at 6 Queen St.
Nick
Hi there, just read your post about your wife's grandmother living at 6 Queen St. My great gran and grandad lived at 8 Queen St from early 1900's- Jane and Charles Kelly, after they passed, one of their daughters- Annie Crow (ne- Kelly) and her husband Edward Crow, lived there until 1960's as well as Ingram family. Do these names ring any bells ? what was her surname please ?

Hi that's amazing. Hope you can view the photo in colour on here? I have a wedding photo of 1957 and some of the same people are on it who are probably are about 5 years older, so your probably right about Coronation. In the photo, Bill Ladbrook has a banner or something weapped round him, shame i dont know what it is.
Would be superb if you have the one with children on ?
Sorry I don't know Georgie Bird? Sounds amazing about your dad's radiogram.
