Boden Road junction with Fox Hollies Road in 1938.
Both roads are still there but the cottages have gone.

The Villa rd picture was on here before, and then it was listed as 1930s, though I'm not sure it wasn't a bit earlier than that from the general look of it. The William Arthur ford, stationers on the far right was there under William from between 1908-10 until between 1933-36, but was then run till 1943 by Elizabeth Ford, presumably his wife, and I reckon they would not have changed the name above the shop. this isn't therefore much help.

Sorry pressed wrong button. Redone...................another villa rd<a href="https://s1099.photobucket.com/albums/g385/maggie19511/?action=view&amp;current=Handsworth20Villa20Rd.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g385/maggie19511/Handsworth20Villa20Rd.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Topsy - another smashing old photo. Looking this time from the Villa Cross up to Soho Road as I can see the Methodist church on the right hand side at the top.

It looks a lot like the Delicatessen which used to be on the corner of Villa Road and Hamstead Road mid 1940's, minus the railings, what do you think all you Handsworth lot? Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of it. Lovely picture of Villa Road, but obviously very old, what about the Villa Cross Hotel, must have been on the site of the Villa Cross Cinema.

Thanks for the picture Lyn, I get it now. Lovely picture but a bit before my time!!!!!! These pictures certainly bring back so many memories, I also love the one of Soho Road, my Grandma used to live in Richmond Road and I went to school in Park Avenue. My Mum used to work in a stud factory it was called Sidney Griffiths, I wonder if anyone remembers this.

Ah memories of Saturday Morning at the Villa Cross Cinema in the 1950s. "We come along on Saturday morning, greeting everybody with a smile. We come along on Saturday morning, knowing it is well worth while..." (shouted rather than sung) Roy Rogers; Flash Gordon; When it was your birthday you got in free and went up on the stage, infront of the screen, for a gift. Some of my mates had three or four birthdays a year!!! (Not me, of course.) I remember the talks between the films and one lady trying to tell us all about 'germs', with giant cardboard cut-out drawings of germs, and having great difficulty being heard over the noise of hundreds of kids. But you could hear a pin drop when the serial film was on!
