Summer Row Canal Yard

Prior to 1868 the Birmingham Canal Navigations Company had a depot that was between Lock 3 & 4 Farmers Bridge Locks which came into existence about 70 years previous. Near there at what was then 22 Summer Row were three canal houses for the staff. These houses being sold in 1868 do not appear to have had cottage rental numbers, being perhaps in existence before the company chose to number their cottages.

June 1864 saw the death of Mr. Richard Thomas of 22 Summer Row, a much respected officer of the Birmingham Canal Company. He seems to have kept an excellent private cellar of wines containing 90 dozen choice vintage ports and 3 dozen of champagne.

In February 1880 the chimney was blow down during a hurricane.

The top image of the last post is further up the flight of Farmers Bridge showing Elkington Factory the entrance to Whitmores Arm and Birmingham Canal Navigation Offices. The second image shows Paradise Street wharf and offices five years before closure. In1773 the attached engraving shows the Pardise Wharf as first built
