Striker On Shackles

New Member
One of my ancestors is listed in the 1901 census with his occupation as ‘Striker On Shackles’.

I’m not sure if that could be a job title, punishment or legal term.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the Forum. This was almost certainly someone in the chain making industry which was largely centred in the Black Country.

Thanks for the welcome and the information!

Yes indeed, I heard he worked at a chainmaker in Netherton so it's all starting to make sense now.

Thanks again for your help,

Tony
