Hello
I am hoping for some help with my brickwall!
My husbands grandmother was put into an orphanage of some kind and was raised by nuns. She was always thought to have been born in the Aston area of Birmingham so I think St. Marys is a likely candidate.
She went by the name of Martha Jones born 22/7/1895 before her marriage, but I have not been able to trace her birth certificate under that name and believe that her mother may have had her out of wedlock and subsequently married a Jones. The story goes that the husband did not want to bring up Martha and she was placed in the convent.
I have recently used findmypast to search for children named Martha in an institution and have hit on one called Martha Drayton in St. Mary's convent.
Does anyone know if it is possible to look at the records from this period (1901ish) and where they are held?
Any help appreciated
Thanks
Debra Normansell
