Could someone please have a go at improving this faded old photo' please?

It is my father's Great Uncle Tom. I'd also appreciate any ideas as to his regiment/date? His shako/hat is on the chair etc. He had rather a colourful history, which I'll write-up at a later date.

Doesn't seem to be that much data actually on the photo to base a restore! Here is my basic try but I am sure those with the whizzo tools can do better

I wonder if anyone regonises the uniform? Or could give an approximate date?
 
I am sure I have seen a similar picture somewhere on another site, but without the hat on the chair, nice photo
