A necessary service in the past. There was one available in the 1870s on a Saturday at the Market Hall according to this article.

We had one who used to come along our road in the 1950s/60s. His grinding wheel was on an open back van. We used to get knives and shears sharpened.

Maturis used to visit the butchers' shops on Bearwood Road to sharpen their knives and cleavers. Sometimes they would do the residential side roads and mother would take her kitchen knives and shears for sharpening.​

 
in the 50s we had a man come around at weekends he had a push cart with a treadle type grinder, he would sharpen allsorts of tools
