I've been looking to see if I could find any census records for Edith. There are a few in Birmingham but none with the father Edward. One with Elijah.

Have you found any census entries for the family?

there is a census record in 1881 which could be correct for john, but where was edith??

1881 in chester

edward parry 32 drapers ?? b. bangor wales
mary 31 b. montgomery
john e 3 b. liverpool
david 0 1 b. chester

Working backwards, this looks like the remains of the family in 1891:- BUT IS IT?

5, Wretham Street, Handsworth RG12/2261 Folio 7 Page 8

PARRY, Mary Head Wid F 36 1855 Living On Her Own Means Newtown
PARRY, Edith Dau F 15 1876 Birmingham
PARRY, Owen Son M 11 1880 Scholar Chester

Unfortunately, this Forum software destroys all semblance of formatting but you can probably fathom it out without me converting it to an image! :(

john edward from Liverrpool

Edward the father from Bangor.. died in 1866

mary possibly about 1903-7

I have seen Edith caroline but there are 3 ediths in birmingham and i thinnk the Elijah is the father's to one. 1901 one is in London one married , but not sure where the third has gone.

1881 there are two one ith grandparents one with a uncle, not sure where the third is.. think there is EDITH, EDITH A, EDITH C,

Maurice
the correct address in 1891

this address links John Edward to The Pinner Commercial Travellers school, where he went between 1886 - 1892
his mothers address, 5 wretham street, handsworth. Father had died that was the reason he was allowed at the school.

the boy at pinner in 1891 was under toxteth, in the schools census records.

but when i wrote they said Ihad the wrong boy because he was not from Liverpool, but birmingham.. I am sure this is the same family, and same edward

Maurice..

the son is James E..
I made that mistake with it a few times..

The info I was supplied by family was
1/ sister who went to live in Canada.
2/ a brother owen and david as they remember

the other family in 1881 had one David O then Owen in 1891 I think is the same person..

The James E I followed and is in Liverpool in 1901
and the other John Edward was in Liverpool in 1901

didnt know if had the right ones in 1911 without buying the certifcates.

Sharon:

No idea of the sister's name that went to Canada I suppose?

Since shipping records are available covering the peiod 1890 to 1960, that might be another angle worth looking at.

just received the next birth certificate for John Edward

1878 december Q 8b Liverpool John Parry

not Edward this father was John Parry

Well not sure from the family BUT if the records are all correct in the census it would be edith..
in 1901 there is a edith Parry living with a canadian as her servant / housekeeper i believe. the lady from canada was something to do.

my ancestry has just run ou so i can not check again.

I have just run upstairs to see just by chance i did print it off and i did

she was in service to a book publisher Exhilda ( canada) 41 and Noel Barnes (ireland) 42
Edith was the Parlour maid.

in st marylebone

Sharon:

Only three Edith PARRYs between 1890 and 1960! They are

Age unknown - spinster - Lucania - 9 Sep 1899 - Liverpool to New York

Age unknown - spinster - Lusitania - 29 Jul 1911 - Liverpool to New York

Age 52 - housekeeper - Nieuw Amsterdam - 23 Aug 1930 - Southampton to New York

Nothing directly into Canada, although it was quite common to go via the USA. All plain Edith, so second forenames. No occupations for the first two. No fellow passengers that seem to link in, though her employers could be travelling in a different class or already in North America. :(

Hi Sharon,

I have your BARNES family travelling 12th Aug 1903 from Liverpool to New York on board the Oceanic - that's Mr N.E. BARNES, Mrs BARNES, and Mr S.F.E. BARNES - and I will email you the image together with an image of the 1901 census for this family.

However, no one called PARRY appears to have travelled on the same voyage or even made the journey to the U.S.A. or Canada in the same year. I'll have another look tomorrow evening - I'm out all day - but I am not too hopeful. The problem with the earlier passenger lists in that they frequently just list a surname and a sex and nothing else that will enable you to ascertain who they are with any degree of confidence.

Sharon:

The only spinster entry I can find is in the following year and she appears to be travelling with a Mr W. and Mrs BROWN:-

11th Feb 1904 Liverpool to Halifax in the ss Dominion - Miss PARRY (no initial or forename) aged 27 - domestic. Not a very likely match.

I've checked the passport applications for 1903 (1904 is not available) and drawn a blank there as well I'm afraid. :(
