Welcome to Birmingham History Forum. I remember Beacon Motors for its illuminated beacon sign with red flames high on its corner frontage. It was quite a landmark at the time when seen off the 65 bus at night.

They were at 51 Aston Road. Seems they branched out into Ford trucks too by the 1960s.

Viv.

Actively promoting (and making money from !) the fitting of safety belts in 1968.

Thanks so much I have a Thames 400e that came from there, well the chassis did the body and cab came from Central Motors, Leicester, so it would appear its a bitsa. Its reg is 229 CVP, would love to hear from anyone who worked there in the 1960's especially the commercial side.

Are any of these adverts any help ?. I've included the last one just for interest as it names Peter Gaskill as the Commercual Sales Manager. Beacons were prolific advertisers from the 1930s through to the 1960s.

Not sure if any of this is useful, I only see vehicles in terms of getting from A to B ! Source of all adverts: British Newspaper Archive

I worked there from 1964 to 1968 when it closed down, it was owned by the Griffiths family, they sold out to Bristol Street Motors when the expressway was being built. The dealership and all the staff were relocated to a new location at the old aston railway sheds on Long Acre Nechells until it closed down making all the staff redundant in 1992.

When I worked for Brooklyn Garage in the early 1960s the son of one of our customers took his dad's Austin A60 out in the evening and at some time after midnight wrapped it round the corner pillars of the Beacon Motors showroom. He suffered multiple injuries and was touch and go for a while but he later hobbled into the garage on crutches so a lucky survivor.
