Ashot&Moore Ltd factory, Legge Lane

After dropping the wife off at work, I thought I'd have a drive around Hockley to see if any work was being started on some explores I've done in the area. Right away I spotted Progressive Engineering was being worked on. Next door is this place. Ashton&Moore Ltd, started in 1925 and mainly connected to the aero industry. Their main business is electroplating and anodising.
Inside was quite a bit of the equipment left behind from these processes. Huge dipping tanks for the electroplating and some acid bath stuff too. You gotta be careful in there, as there are still some chemical viles in there.

Well done. How do you do it, I'm so jealous.
You say the place next door is being worked, what they doing?

The old progressive engineering building has been stripped out ready for a conversion. The door has been ripped off tho, same as this place. Either people looking for scrap metal to rob or just someone desperate for somewhere to sleep!!! Looks like work on the other place has pretty much come to a dead stop.

ashton & moore
i am very surprized that have finished at legge lane
are they redeveloping the area when was these pic taken froth ;
i worked there way back in the sixties when they started to do
continemial shift work and i was an anodiser
they was the second best company to work for up around the
jewelery quarter especialy for conditions and pay ,
i have worked most of the electro platers in the area
and the stannards was appalling to work in and the pay was
completely rubbish, you name them i worked there
some had whopping big holes in the walls in fact i would
gaping big holes you could have had a conversaton with the
passing public the use of elctric was behond the health and
safety rules how we had to work and how some of these
dodgie directers got away with murder
ashton,s was hard to get a postion with in the company
because they was known for good working conditions and pay
around the area there was a good company in st pauls sq;
hey was top dogs for pay ;even then they was hard to get in
ashtons had a good track record for there stannard of work
manship and qaulitity
the cream of platers was in argle st nechells [ delta metals ]
where i worked for years
and the worst one i ever worked for in digbeth
where the director was a bounder another broken down st
i will not mention is name but for years this guy whom
lived in reddich travelled to his business by midland red
apparently had set up companys here and every where
and the tav man was on his heels with the police as
well
to cut short this true story . when friday pay day came ,
around mid day due to get payed we was ; in
walked the tax man , and the police
our director friend bolted out the back door and eluded
them again and mr x was never seen again
lucky for the police and the tax man we eventualy got paid
we all had to go to union street back to the tax office
make statements to the tax officier and he paid us our wages
and for our short coming ofour so called tax that mr x
was alledging each week that he stopped on our wage
packet we was all reimbursed
in those days aroud the hockley area there was alot of these
cow boy directors running dodgy business,s in
poor bombed out factorys [ electro platers and anodisings firms
i leart my trade and proffession as an eltro plater -anodiser
and that is my trade , i leart from young days
and has i got older i went to the licence trade for he rest of my
life , pubs ,and clubs .and in the brewery , m,b ,and bank,s
of dudley ,
have a nice day every body best wishes astonian ;;;

great shots neil...just noticed them...froth isnt this the building we tried to get in on the jewellery quarter walk and that guy told us to go away....lol.....neil did you get in via a black door then there was another one after that...

lyn

No Lyn, the front door was wide open. On the floor even. I just had to keep ducking out of view of people going to work when going in. The last thing you want is the coppers turning up just as you're getting into your stride!!! I could hear the guys in the JW Evans place that's being converted which was a little off-putting!! LOL

I'm going back soon, as there are 2 more floors to explore!!

ahh must be another building then neil...the one we saw the other week had a blackmetal front door then another one after it...but the guy washing his car had his beads on us....good luck with your next mission..

stay safe..
