I thought i would mention the Upstairs Club which was over the Old Stone Cross in Dale End. It only lasted about 18 months but was packed every week. It opened with Ken Rattenbury's band who had a weekly TV spot at the time. Ken Ingram also played there along wth the Blyth River Stompers and the...

    Hairdressing & barbering

I can still picture dad standing at the sink (1940s & 50s) stripped to the waist, braces hanging down shaving with a cut throat - he always used one. During the first World War a fellow soldier asked him for a shave but unfortunately the guy moved and received a terrible cut -"filling a fire...

    Early Cricket Clubs

Hi Emma You mention that your husband's grandfather lived around Edgbaston. You might find the book 'Balsall Heath: A History' by Valerie M Hart, of interest. In it she writes (page58) "Sport in general was a popular form of relaxation and especially favoured was cricket. The Pickwick Club...

Hi Elizabeth Could you be thinking of the American camp on the Bristol Road at Edgbaston - near Eastern Road. I always thought their wooden huts looked like a prison camp when i rode by on the tram.

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

As Wendy says the Casino was where the Priory Queensway is now. The Springfield was on Springfield Road and wasn't a studio. It was upstairs and a dancehall like the Ritz. The studio opposite the mermaid may have been Alex. I don't know.

    Alex's Pie Stands

Hi Wendy I didn't take these photos. I don't know who did. My wife came across them in a family album and I would imagine they were taken about 1960. We think there should be another one but can't find it.

    Alex's Pie Stands

Stitcher. you are quite right. The pie stand by the Albany was Alex Fleur de Lys. The stand in front of Snow Hill was not. It was in the ownership of my wife's family throughout the 1950's and 1960's.
