Going back a few generations, the palser family (my mom's relatives) seem to have always lived in and around central Birmingham. Fairly unusual name so anyone got any info about them?

Have you any names in particular? I just check the 1901 census for any palser's living in Birmingham and there are about 75 of them living in Birmingham/Aston!

My grandfather, Arthur, was born in 1898, I think he was 2nd youngest of 8. His brothers and sisters were Richard, Emily, Harold, Martha, Francis (Frank), Ada, and Nell

I forgot Kate and Rose but They were born a bit later(?)

The family are on the 1901 census living at 9 Bk 26 Essington St, Ladywood. (I think it's Essington but I can't be sure)

William, Patience and Jeremiah were not born in the county. I found Jeremihas baptism in 1814 in the Methodist Chapel, Dursley, Gloucester. So perhaps the Palsers came from the Gloucester area.

Thanks to everyone this afternoon. I feel as if I've made new friends as well as learning loads.

I have found a William born 1806 in Gloucestershire who married a Sophie Leadbeater - I think he maybe my great, great, great grandfather, but I can't trace who his father was? Can anyone help?

My grandfather, Arthur, was born in 1898, I think he was 2nd youngest of 8. His brothers and sisters were Richard, Emily, Harold, Martha, Francis (Frank), Ada, and Nell

Going back a few generations, the palser family (my mom's relatives) seem to have always lived in and around central Birmingham. Fairly unusual name so anyone got any info about them?

I am looking for information on another branch of the Palser family around Sparkbrook. I am researching George Frederick b 1849, d 16/5/14 married to Mary Ann b 1850, d 13/1/14. Their children, George Silvanus d 23/7/1942 and Florance Kate d 28/12/1922. They share a grave in Lodge Hill cemetery with a large headstone.

Their other children, William Henry c1876, Annie Elizabeth c1878, Lucy Maria c1883, Francis Edwin c1888 and my Grandmother, Ada b1897.

David Smith, Bromley Kent

1881 19 Summer grove, Summer road, Edgbaston

George F Palser age 32 Pattern maker (Artz)
Mary Ann age 31
George S 7
William H 5
Annie E 3
Florence K 8 months.

1891 165 Prescott street
the family with the addition of Lucy and Francis

1901 the same address with the addition of Ada George Slyvanus is a Brass finisher boarding with a family in Wiltshire.

1911 Wheeleys Lane Edgbaston and George Frederick age 62 is now a Beerhouse keeper.

George Frederick Palser married Mary Collins in 1872 they has 8 children but one died.
Given the gap between 1878 and 1883 births it may have been Frederick George b 1879 died 1880.

In 1910 George Sylvanus travelled to USA to join his brother Frank Edwin who married Blanche Wynne on 19th august 1910
on Georges travel documents he is a Brass finisher, 5ft 6ins Fair hair and complexion with blue eyes his parents live at Welcome? Lane Birmingham(possible misunderstanding of Wheelers Lane)

Thank you Alberta,
I am amazed at the speed of your response.
I last researched the Palsers in 1995, I met a distant relation and his information neatly dovetailed with mine. This information was moved to safe keeping and subsequently became lost to me. That relation is now not in good health and is no longer interested, but kindly agreed to copy and post what he has, (I believe He will be returning some of my research). We both had the same photograph of George Frederick's father, again I believe George, who cut a very imposing Victorian figure complete with mutton chop whiskers!

Again Thanks
David Smith

As this old thread has been resurrected again, I'll throw in my two pennorth! My great great grandmother was Maria PALSER - born circa 1799 at Coaley in Gloucestershire so that ties in with postings #10 and #14, married Joseph TUBB at St Philip, Birmingham in 1817, and died in Brum in 1863. As the Coaley parish registers are not online, I've never bothered researching this further. The TUBB ancestors originally came from Shoreditch in London and were silk weavers, most probably of Hugenot extraction if you go back far enough. If anyone ventures as far as the Gloucester Record Office, I would appreciate a look-up as it is rather a long way from Crete!

Maurice

Maurice, Ive just received some of my original research back along with photocopy photographs in the post, along with additional research from the elderly gent in Birmingham., I recall him telling me he was looking for a connection to the Gloucestershire Palsers)
George Frederick 1849-1914 (Wife of Mary Ann ) was the son of George Palser (1822-1907) His wife Was a Maria Eliza Chinery (b 1821) so not born a Palser.
Interestingly, going back a generation, this father, George Palser (d 1857 age 65) Married Elizabeth Hands (d 1867 age 74) married at St Philips 11/5/1816 would indicate a connection, is your Maria my Georges sister?

David

David,

That is quite possible, but I have no other information about either her parents or siblings at the moment. Despite putting requests on various mailing lists, Curious Fox, etc., I've drawn a complete blank. Since moving to Crete about 11 years ago, I've only managed to revisit the UK every other year and with so many people to see - none near Gloucester - I just haven't got anywhere with this bit of research. We don't even have LDS history centres here, so the loan of the appropriate parish register film is not possible. Eventually, if I live long enough, perhaps FreeReg will get access to transcribe this parish!

Maurice

David,

I've just done another check on Coaley at FreeReg. Baptisms have now been transcribed up to 1800, so I searched on 1780 to 1800 for Maria PALSER and included 40 places within 9.3 miles - a feature of their new search engine. Still nothing, so I think I will have to wait a little longer.

Maurice

David,

This is my last reply on open thread and then I will take it into private message. On FMP there is the following entry:-

Mary dau of Richard & Katherine PALSER of Wootton-under-Edge [8km south of Coaley]
Born 20 July 1797 baptised 20 March 1799

Other than that, FreeReg are not currently working on Coaley after 1800 - presume they don't have access.

Close, but the wrong side of Dursley from Coaley and Mary not Maria.

Maurice

I am intrigued - George Palser's marriage to Elizabeth Hands is witnessed by Sarah Hands and Michael Broome. Maria Palser's marriage to Joseph Tubb is witnessed by Sarah Butler and Michael Broome. The Sarah might be different people but Sarah could have got married between the other weddings. Michael could be the same person. Does this imply Maria and George are related or is that a leap too far?

Janice

These are the photos referred to in post 22, I believe these to be George Palser (1822-1907) His wife Was a Maria Eliza Chinery (b 1821). I doubt they the next generation c 1850-1914, or the previous generation c1792-c1867.
So my questions are: 1) Has anybody else a copy or seen these photos, 2) Any idea of the date, from the fashion of the day or they wearing some form of regional attire?
I Know my distant relation had the same photograph, so there is a good chance there are more prints out there.

David,

I've certainly never seen these before and from the older photographs in my possession, I would suggest that they would be taken in the very late 1860s or 1870s at the earliest, which would make them 50ish, though they look older than that.

Hi Graham , please find attached the picture that I mentioned, My great grandmother ADA PALSER is at the front holding the rabbit .. We both share the same grt grt grandparents .. I live in Birmingham about 5 miles from where this picture was taken in Ladywood .. Ada was such a character and always laughing ! She passed away in 1988, I have one big regret that I didn't sit and listen to her stories, but that's being young for you ... which one is your great grandfather on the picture ... Ada left me the photo when she passed away, I can remember it being up in her house.
Ada had two children, George and Mary my grandmother, she married George Field.

Hope you like the photo

Hello, I am still not sure how to start a new thread in the 'From the newspapers section'
Do you have access to Birth death and marriage section of the Birmingham Daily Post for 7 May 1890, reference George Palser about the death of his wife Maria?

Please feel free to post or re word this message in the appropriate section, ie Palser thread or lost pubs, ,(Eagle and Ball Morville St) or newspaper thread.
Regards
David Smith
