Barr Beacon

Visited today, all the roof covering is in place, Zinc green to match the old roof, some of the scaffolding to be removed soon, the Flag pole to be reinstated in it`s original position, between the Memorial and the tree`s, the white fabric in the pics on the Zinc roof is only a temporary protection. then visited Great Barr Hall.

My father had something to do with a building on Barr Beacon many years ago,he had his own building business.

derek might be next door connected with water

I'm not sure what building work my father was involved with,I was too young to remember but my eldest brother happened to mention it some years ago...it would'nt surprise me if it was a statue or some other monument,he knew all about that sort of work,he was also a pargiter by trade.

It is starting to look good will have to pay a visit next time I go to my brothers. Thanks for the update Dave.

Might have worked on this Memorial at some time

great photo's dave, so good to see it back in all its glory, to the local men and women who perished for our peace, but I am surprised they re-roofed with copper again, as I am sure it will be stolen again, a sad reflection of our present society. you might think that they would use a synthetic material which looked like copper!!. paul.

The trouble is teenagers congregate there and this is what happens!

It would be great if the Barr Beacon Park was part of the"Adopt-a-Street" scheme in some way. I noticed this scheme was very big in the USA for years and now it has come to Canada and I noticed the other day that a busy main street close by has become adopted by locals. Sadly, it seems that the streets that have the most vandalism and litter problems are those with convenience stores or fast food restaurants on them. It's not always locals who take part in the scheme but also corporations with businesses in towns and cities. Brookvale Park is supported by the Interserve Co with premises in George Road and also by the West Midlands Police. It is simply amazing what they have achieved over the last year in Brookvale Park.

A bit about the scheme at this link: https://www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/sdop_littering_adopt-a-street.htm

jennyann "adopt a highway" has been successful for years in the US...its very rare we see litter around especially in Texas...the roads have signs all over the state " DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS" and if one is caught littering anywhere its a $200.00 fine...we have groups of boyscouts girlscouts and lots of other groups cleaning up trash, living so near the beach the highschool teenagers will go down the beach and do a good clean up we have thousands of visitors in the summer and the beach is left real messy, l think by installing the lessons of being neat and tidy at an early age the future generations give us hope things will improve...up to now we have'nt had any graffitti but we are a small town l know the large cities have it though......love the pictures of the beacon it looks so much better than the last time l saw it.....just hope the young people will learn to respect all the work and effort that has been put forth into getting the beacon in shipshape and what it stands for....once again the pictures are great....Brenda

On Sunday there were several hundred people around the memorial attending the annual "Bands on Beacon" event, still no excuses though.

After that amount of people on Sunday, the one Can was the only rubbish to be seen, Excellent.

Digger at the flagpole is doing preparation work around the flagpole and up to the memorial for a hard standing walk way, the other pics of the Dig, last day 21st July.
