Yardley Wood Senior School

Bernard67Arnold

master brummie
I went to Yardley Wood Senior Boys and left at Easter 1944. Is the the
school still there? I am told they have pulled down the pub near by, the
Haven, was it. The infant and juniors used to be further up the road
towards the Church. How the districts change over the years,Ive only
been back half a dozen times since I left 1957 under the overspill scheme

My first wife was at Yardley Wood Bernard - Carole Pagett. Also there would have been of my knowledge Monica Russell, Anne Woodward, Chris Watkins and John Dark (a distant cousin) amongst many others.

PS Billesley school figures on its own thread.

Hello there John, It was a surprise someone remembering the old school, I put the thread on ages ago, I must a bit older than you, I seem to be older than everyone nowadays!! I left during the war in 1944, the Head then was Mr Spicknell. When the war started in 39, most of the male staff
were either called up or joined, theRAF mainly. My last teacher was a Mrs
Landucy, not sure how you spell it, she was married to a Czech flyer in the
RAF. In 1957 my wife and I moved out of Birmingham on the Overspill
scheme, My sister in law still lives in our old house in Cleeve Road.
If you ever see any reunions at the school perhaps you will let know,
Bye for now Bernard

Hi Bernie, Dont recall any of the names you mentioned, I may have been a
little before them as I told John I left in 1944, I was given a letter ordering me to report to Labour Exchange on the Monday after, I was then
directed to the Rover at Kings road, I used to go by train from Yardley
Wood station, I am not sure but I think a Weekly return was 1s2p.
What a culture shock! but thats another story, cheers Bernard

Hi Bernard - Yes silly me I picked up on the date you left Yardley Wood as the date you left school.

Hya Bernie, I knew Carol well, chris watkins lived next door to carol. monica lived on the opposite side of the road, a little further down.
John Dark lived on the corner, and he is still around. He actually sings in the church choir. I lived opposite Ann Woodward and still live very nearby. There are a great many of us still in this little enclave, many have married each other and their children who are grown up have also married each other.

If you need any information I can pm you.

One thing I remember from my days there was all the classes lining up in the playground at 9 am and standing to attention, then marching left, right, left right into the hall for assembly.

Hi John, I too can remember forming up in the playground and marching up
to the classroom, now and again the teacher would say, wait outside, dont
go in, then she would stand by the door and look at everyones shoes,
One morning just before I left, it was pouring down with rain and all I
had was a pair of old pumps on, she asked me why I had not got any shoes, I told her, and next morning she bought in a pair of RAF shoes
which belonged to her husband, when I got home my Mom said, they are
too good for you and promply took them to the pawn shop, dont talk to me
about the good old days! cheers now Bernard

I have just dug out this photo taken at Yardley Wood School.

I can spot my first wife and leave it to others to fill in the details.

Photo can be found here as I can no longer get the link to upload.

Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain your old attendance records from your school? I have a feeling mine werent very good, my Mother went back to work in
1939 when the war started and I was often kept at home to look after my younger sister who had a heart condition, I went to Yardley Wood Schools from 1935/44

Hi Bernard
The records for Yardley Wood Boys school are at Birmingham City Archives and access is restricted under the Data Protection but you could always e-mail the Archives about having acccess or a copy of the records relating to yourself. This is the link to the information:

Hi Bernie, I know this is a very old post but unfortunately I was unable to load the photo. Do you still have it? My mum could have been at Yardley Wood School at this time and recognises some of the names that have been mentioned.

Many Thanks
Wendy
