WWI Medal Card?

master brummie
I need some help please. My Gt Uncle, William Davis was killed by shell-fire in the village of Montauban on 1st Nov 1916. I know where he is buried in the Guards Cemetery at LeBoeufs in France, but I cannot find his Medal Card. His details are;

10049 Pte William Davis. 8 Bn Sth Staffs Regt.

I would be really grateful if some kind soul could find this for me, it would complete the picture, so to speak.

barrie, If your g/t uncle joined up in different regiment and transfered to The Stafford`s he might have two No`s, because your number did not stay with you all through your service, in WW2 your joining number stayed with you.

I can see what you mean mate, it don't bode very well for me searches, does it. :)

I found his Medal Index Card on the National Archives site under the name Davies. He never served in any other regiment according to Soldiers Died in Great War database.

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk...asp?Edoc_Id=2269966&queryType=1&resultcount=1

However, on checking Ancestry Uk, I cannot find him at all. This does not surprse me though. My great Uncle, John Witsey, KIA with the 5th South Staffs is listed as being in the S Stuff Regt. His brother Charles, KIA with the 1st Worcester is listed as being killed serving with the 1st Darc ???

I have been to the Guards cemetery a couple of time do you want me to upload a some pictures of it?

Regards

Terry

My friends g/father joined the Worcestershire Reg and later was posted to the Berkshire Reg, we only found this out when we got in touch with the Worcesters and they told us his joining up number which his medals card number had on it.

Terry.

Thank you very much for that mate, I have downloaded the card, it must be the best £3.50 I have ever spent.

Photo's of the Guards Cemetery would be marvelous mate, I'd love to see some.

edited to say; As William arrived in France 4 Jan 1915 (from medal card) he was a volunteer, as conscription did not start until 1916 I believe.

Further to this medal card business, I had always thought that a mans Regimental Number was unique to him, but from this you can see that it isn't so. My Gt Uncle's number was 10049, and so are most of the people listed below.

Barrie,

Isn't this site marvellous. There's always someone who tries to help or come up with the answer. Know what you mean about the £3.50, my husband was so pleased, when I downloaded his dad's medals card. Money well spent!

Ann

Barry, I believe you can get the same number being used in each Battalion of a Regiment, I'm sure Terry can explain the system used.

Hello Barrie

Here are some views of the Guards Cemetery, Les Boeufs, taken in July 2006. I was there for the 90th Anniversary of the Somme.

Regards

Terry

Taken from the book 'British Battalions on the Somme' by Ray Westlake.

It was on the 1st of Nov 1916 that the Bn was shelled in the village of Montauban, where they had gone for R&R. It appears that 2 men were killed in the shelling, one of them was my Gt Uncle, William Davis.
