a friend told me that widowers were not allowed to stay in a house alone and were often sent to a workhouse, can anyone tell me if this is correct? thank you.
I would think it depended on if they had enough money to pay the rent (few people owned houses in those days). If the person / family weren't earning enough for rent / food etc, then the workhouse was the only option. No dole or benefits like we have now.
