Workhouse Death 1886 - help with records needed

Hi,

I have found out that my 3 x great grandfather was in the workhouse and died there in feb 1886, (western road Workhouse).

I have found the 1881 census and he is living with his family in Aston. He dies in the workhouse in 1886.

What I want to find out is:

When/why he entered the workhouse
Did his family go onto the workhouse with him - wife and 3 young children aged 15, 12 & 7
Did his wife die in the workhouse too in dec 1886

I do know that his 3 youngest children went to live with their eldest sister as they appear as lodgers in the 1891 census with her.

Any help much appreciated,
Thanks

I think you will find that the work house's of this period were the only "Old peoples homes " of the day and especially if you were sick as well as old and did'nt own your own property or have any means of pension then you went to the work house to die and be buried by the parish.
