work on new street

bit of work going on in new st

Thanks for the posting. About time - The pedestrianised streets in Birmingham have become a real trip hazard in recent years - loose paving and dips in the surface where subsidence has occurred. High Street needs the same attention.

Unusually for me (ha ha) I have been know to moan for years about the state of walkways in Brum....they get a few blocks up and either just leave them piled up around holes or put them back all over the place......with all the uneven surfaces and the bikes/scooters it was safer when you shared roads with the traffic.....

The main problem with all the subsidence is the number of lorries and delivery vehicles which have been allowed to drive over the pedestrianised areas. When the pedestrianisation was rushed through back in 1990/1991 (remember that?), little thought was given to the impact of hundreds/thousands of vehicle movements over the brickwork. In addition, the advent of the German market and the weight of that has added to the deterioration of the pavements.

They will have to put down a very strong sub-base now to ensure that these vehicles don't create subsidence again.

This was also the reason for redoing Centenary Square as the square was used by heavy cranes etc for the Big Wheel, ice rinks, etc. In the case of Centenary Square I just hope that it is strong enough to support those enormous structures. PS - I hate seeing them taking over the Square for 2/3 months of the year! Bah humbug!

cant disagree with you sandy..i keep thinking to myself "will they ever finish birmingham" alas i think not..its been like a massive building site for many years now and sad to say for the past 10 years or so i have avoided visiting the city centre unless i have to go there..just do not recognise it anymore :(
