Does anybody remember a little 5 year old boy called Robert who was drowned in the canal at Winson Green in 1950. ? That little boy was my husbands cousin. My husband was only 2 at the time so he does'nt remember anything about him, only what he has been told. As far as i know, Robert had been playing in the area surrounding the Queens Head pub at the time of the accident. I am interested in finding out some details. I did go to the central library but i am unable to search through newspaper cuttings until they re-open in September.I'm sure there must be somebody out there who can remember this tragic accident,please let me know. Many thanks ...Yogimon

My mothers little brother drowned in a pool in West Bromwich in 1926 playing with his friends. His death certificate gave us a lot of information. I hope to get the inquest details one day as well.

My husband said there were several drownings around that time, one child may have been under a bridge at Spring Hill by the Hospital? Sorry he can't remember any more than that.
rosie.

the little boy who drowned under the bridge it was the bridge that was down the side of the winson green prison he lived not far from there not sure what road

hi guys ;
yes i can recall these incidences of people drowning in that murky cannal of several occasions
one at winso green the other by clissold passage one at monument rd ; number 8 bus clock in ; one of ny friends oldr brother whom lived in heath street by the traffic lights of winson green rd his name was ray our dear old friend mossy would also know of ray as it was is best mate mickys brother
walked to cannock by the tow path to his aunties on the way back close to the gate of winson green he had a fitt as he suffered them for years
and he went straight over the edge and drowned ; the other occasion was another old friend of mine whom i was with when we was young at monument rd clocking just yards from the little boy whom drowned under the bridge and just yards from himabout twelve months later
my friend with another brother of his whom was john and viv ; had brought there little brother whom was about seven at the time along with us
because there mom and dad was working but on that occasion we was dragging the cannal with a big hook on a tow prope
we use to fish for bikes that other kids from ledsam street had nicked and dumped in the cut ; as we was carried away ao the moment youg stevie at the age of seven toddled alomg the path away from us ; next thing we knew the litte was in the water i ran along and dragged him out ;of the cut ;
the ironic thing about this toddler was the second time i saved him from death as he was on the old bonea rail tracks behind summer field park
i dived across the track whilst the big ones watched from the top of the embankment i slid down just in time as the engine approached himand threw him onto the other embankment ;soinfact i saved this lads life twice in his little life ;
but the old winson green cannal was murky ; we used to play the lock keeper up along from there as he lived there on the cannal he later retired and got the job at the smiths arms on winson green rd ; but wenever cheeked him there or we would not get our beers ; those was the days best wishes astonian;

My Dad grew up in 2/19 Norman St. Winson Green, I remember him telling me that his brother and others, taught him to swim by throwing him into the canal. As a child I recall looking over a wall at the horse-drawn canal boats going by and also hearing screaming from the asylum on the other bank of a filthy, litter strewn canal.
