Williams family in Ladywood

Paul D

master brummie
Hi, im new here and would like to find out about where my grandad was born and raised until he was 17 which would have been 1932. He then went into the Hampshire Regiment and then moved to Southampton.I remember him well as I was 21 when he passed away. His name was Herbert Williams and everyone called him Bill. His parents up until the day they married lived next door to each other in Graham Street, would that be in Aston Manor? When I find out the address in Ladywood I will post more details. I would love to see a picture of the streets he lived in .His parents were married in 1900 at St Peters church. Their names were Henry John Williams and Winifred Elizabeth Hubble.

Wow, that was quick Alberta. I,ll have to look up Anderton St on Google street walk. Big family, my grandads family ended up with 7 children. When I get some more information I will post it. Thank you

Here are some Electoral roll entries – all at same address as 1912 so I would hazard a guess this is where your grandfather grew up. He himself isn’t on any of these rolls due to his age.

1912 Absent Voters list has Henry John Williams living at 12 Leabrook Avenue, Northbrook Street, Rotten Park Ward, Ladywood – Army Number 118499 Pte. 348 Co. M.T.,A.S.C.

1925 Henry John, Winifred Elizabeth, Henry Joseph and Francis George Williams.

1927 Henry John, Winifred Elizabeth, and Bernard John Williams.

1930 John Henry and Winifred Elizabeth Williams.

1939 Henry John and Reginald Donald Williams.

Winifred Elizabeth Williams dies aged 55 in 1931 December quarter Birmingham S 6d 209

thanks again bewdley, that last entry, I always thought my granddads birthday was in march. I have just rang my mum up and Leabrook Avenue has jogged her memory, its all coming together. She remembers a story that either my granddads father or his grandfather spent a little time in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. Seems harsh but it was different then. I would love to see a picture of what Leabrook Avenue looked like when my granddad lived there. I,ll go through the pictures here on the forum and see what comes up.My mum says she thinks some of the family worked in the gold quarter too making jewellery. Thanks again.

Hi the dates given are the quarters a birth is registered ie if a baby is born in January then it should be registered within the March quarter. A birth has to be registered within 42 days of birth in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, so if baby is born in March it may well be it isn't registered until April which falls into the June quarter if you know what I mean.

It is possible for a birth registration to be after 42 days, but a fine was incurred. My grandfather's date of birth was 'adjusted' by 2 months to avoid this! So he was actually registered over three and a half months after his birth.
His birth cert shows a DOB two weeks AFTER his baptism record shows he was baptised. The bapt record showed the correct dob!
He always celebrated two birthdays!
