I am looking for more info on William Smith who is listed in 1911 at 29 Asquith Road Erdington. His occupation is Gun Action Maker. Manufacturer. I am trying to find out where his factory was...yes I know Smith needle in a haysack springs to mind. Any help would be great.

hi wendy. looking at the 1911 census it says manufacturer as you say, but then says "worker" so i think it wouldnt have been his own factory.

in 1901 he is living in farm st. again says gun maker, but then worker.

your meet-up on monday sounds very interesting but im sorry i cant make it. all the best, chris x

Thanks Shera. This is a difficult search as I know his son Albert had either a gun or gun component works. He married Charlotte Partridge thats why I am searching...No problem Chris I know evenings can be difficult see you soon...xxx

The electoral rolls show Albert and Charlotte Smith at 77 Foxton Road Washwood Heath from 1930 - 1939 (along with some Partridge family).

The 1939 roll also lists another address for Albert & Charlotte under "Abode/Other info" as 10/11 Saint Mary's Row, Saint Marys.

The 1962 Kelly's Directory Trades lists "Gun Action Filers - Smith E. J. & H. 10 (back of) St Mary's Row, Smith A. 10 (back of) St Mary's Row"

Oh Wow Suzanne I have been searching for this for ages thats brilliant! I met uncle Albert (Smith) he came to visit us in the early 70's he was a real character even in his 80's. I remember rushing round sorting out our best cups and saucers.. We knew he had a gun factory but never talked about it much.

Can you tell me who the Partridge's were please.
