Hi all:)

Can anyone help me try to find my Great Uncle William Grindley, After serving in India, he then joined the Auxilllary Fire Service where he lost a lung when trapped in a burning building, after that he ran a bric-a-brac shop at the bottom of Hyde Road, I think he also lived a little way up the same road too. My Mother thinks that he ran it when she was aged roughly 17, so that would be around 1946, but I'm not sure for how many years or if it was run with his wife Violet, nee Jones.

Any help would be appreciated:)

Hi there, looking at the Electoral Rolls on line,I can see he and Violet were at 66 Hyde Rd until at least 1950.(1950 is the latest date available on line)

That's fantastic, My Mother's timeline was a little bit sketchy, but she was sure of the street. I do know that William died in 1964 and his occupation was given as a general store proprietor, but residing on Willets Road.

Thank you so much, your Electoral info is very much appreciated and has helped a great deal

Kellys doesn't show the house (only a small proportion of private addresses are listed), but does show the shop. William George Grindley, hardware dealer, is at 39 Clark St ( the building is on the corner of Hyde Road, but has address in Clark st) in 1949 and 1950. In 1956 it is Mrs Violet Grindley, hardware dealer. In 1962-64 it is W.Grindley, shopkeeper, and in 1966-67 V.Grindley, shopkeeper, but by 1969 the street is listed, but no buildings in it are listed. The shop is not listed in 1944 either with him or anyone else.

Thanks mike, you've been a real help, I now know Violet did indeed run the shop after William died in '64, and it all ties together the information that I already have for William and Violet. My Mother will be delighted to read what you have found, thanks again :)

I remember this shop,as we lived in Clark Street and used Bill's shop Daily as my mum would send us for different messages as she called the shopping. It was on the corner in between Clark St and Hyde Rd . I hope you can find some more information on this site as people are very giving with there time .We lived there in the early sixties .

Thank you so much for your lovely piece about your shopping trips to Bill's shop. I know very little about Bill as he died the year before I was born. Luckily my Mother has a good memory and has been able to tell me what little she knew about about him. I know he and Violet who also ran the shop after he died in 1964, didn't have any children of their own. I do know however that they adopted a boy called Alan (Grindley)

Thank you
Regards
Dee
